Open Rank Faculty Position in Literacy Education (Elementary Writing)

The University of Maryland, College Park’s Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership (TLPL) invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-line position in Literacy Education with an emphasis on Elementary Writing. The TLPL department is a vibrant and exciting place for scholarly inquiry, teaching and mentoring, and working alongside talented and productive faculty, staff, and graduate students and a number of highly diverse school district partners and state stakeholders. Importantly, our department, our college, and our campus are committed to challenging systemic racism, examining important questions, and partnering to offer solutions that contribute to equity and social justice in education. We seek a colleague who manifests the same commitments through research, teaching, and service that can contribute to literacy education in the state of Maryland and beyond.

The successful candidate has an active research agenda related to elementary (K-6) literacy education. The position is open to a broad range of specializations related to elementary English Language Arts education, but we are particularly interested in scholars with expertise in written communication in K-6 classrooms, including elementary writing instruction, language development, or writing development for elementary students. Candidates with experience teaching and conducting research on issues related to elementary writing or English Language Arts education for underserved and/or minoritized populations are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have earned a doctorate in elementary literacy education or closely related field from an accredited university by the time of appointment. The successful candidate has (a) Experience in K-6 schools as an elementary classroom teacher, literacy specialist, or literacy coach; (b) A record of research, scholarly publications, and presentations in elementary (K-6) literacy education; (c) A record or vision for securing external funding; (d) Evidence of teaching effectiveness, particularly in elementary literacy and/or English Language Arts education coursework for preservice and inservice teachers; (e) Professional service at the institutional, local, and national levels; and (f) Strong commitment to the department’s equity goals and social justice mission. Expectations will be commensurate with the rank sought (Assistant, Associate, Full).
