DEPARTMENT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING, POLICY AND LEADERSHIP

Open Rank Faculty Position in Literacy Education (Elementary Reading)

The University of Maryland, College Park’s Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership (TLPL) invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-line position in Literacy Education with an emphasis on Elementary Reading. The TLPL department is a vibrant and exciting place for scholarly inquiry, teaching and mentoring, and working alongside talented and productive faculty, staff, and graduate students and a number of highly diverse school district partners and state stakeholders. Importantly, our department, our college, and our campus are committed to challenging systemic racism, examining important questions, and partnering to offer solutions that contribute to equity and social justice in education. We seek a colleague who manifests the same commitments through research, teaching, and service that can contribute to literacy education in the state of Maryland and beyond.

The successful candidate is a scholar who has an active research agenda related to elementary (K-6) reading or literacy education. We are particularly interested in scholars with expertise in elementary reading assessment, reading and language development, evidence-based reading instruction, and/or digital literacy. Candidates with experience teaching and conducting research on issues related to elementary reading/literacy education for underserved and/or minoritized populations are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have earned a doctorate in elementary literacy education or closely related field from an accredited university by the time of appointment. The successful candidate has (a) Experience in K-6 schools as an elementary classroom teacher, reading specialist, or reading/literacy coach; (b) A record of research, scholarly publications, and presentations in elementary (K-6) reading or literacy education; (c) A record or vision for securing external funding; (d) Evidence of teaching effectiveness, particularly in elementary reading education and/or elementary literacy coursework for preservice and inservice teachers; (e) Professional service at the institutional, local, and national levels; and (f) Strong commitment to the department’s equity goals and social justice mission. Expectations will be commensurate with the rank sought (Assistant, Associate, Full)

Applicants should provide (1) A detailed letter describing qualifications for the position, including academic background, research agenda, prior teaching experience, and service/outreach; (2) Current curriculum vitae; (3) Two examples of scholarship, particularly those that demonstrate scholarly expertise related to elementary reading or literacy education; and (4) Names and contact information for three references to be entered in the online application. All application materials must be uploaded to https://ejobs.umd.edu/postings. Screening will begin on September 18, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled. For questions about the position, please contact the Search Committee Co-Chairs, Jennifer Turner (jdturner@umd.edu) and Wayne Slater (wslater@umd.edu). For questions about the online application process, please contact Maria Somarriba (msomarri@umd.edu).
