Job Description Summary
The UACS Sports Coordinator will work closely with the UACS Sports, Fitness, and Health Director (UACS Sports Dir) to implement the Cross-Grade Sports (CGS) Program and school day PE and socialized recess support. They will implement the Cross-Grade Sports curriculum and provide direct support of the high school students engaged. They will also manage program attendance and student communications, and student incentive logs. They will provide direct support of the Philadelphia Youth Network enrollment process. They will support the UACS Sports Director to leverage university and community resources to expand academic year CGS collaborations and partnerships.
This position will also work closely with District Principals, Deans and Climate Managers to schedule and plan supports that meet school-wide health and fitness goals for K8 students. They will provide direct coordination, coaching, and technical assistance of the Penn ABCS volunteers and work-study students engaged in the program. This position is responsible for providing a safe, inclusive environment for sports, games, and play during the school day. They will attend regular stakeholder meetings, and plan with the school leadership and Netter center staff. A major component of this position includes working collaboratively with the UACS Sports Director, UACS Site Directors, Netter Center part-time staff and others engaged in University-Assisted Community Schools (UACS) Sports, Fitness & Health.
This position will provide ongoing curricular support for the school day PE/recess initiatives and the Cross-Grade Sports program for K12 students, and identify strategies for evaluating and measuring health and fitness outcomes for UACS Sports programs. A major component of the position includes documenting program activities and supervising the program's university student workers and volunteers and supporting their delivery of effective instruction and programming. This position will also implement all required program reporting and compliance, including that of funders and the Netter Center.
Job Description
Founded in 1992, the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships is the University's primary vehicle for advancing civic and community engagement at Penn. It brings together the resources and assets of both the University and the wider community to help solve universal problems such as poverty, health inequities, environmental sustainability, and inadequate, unequal education as they are manifested in the University's local geographic area of West Philadelphia and Philadelphia at large. The Netter Center develops and helps implement democratic, mutually transformative, place-based partnerships between Penn and West Philadelphia that advance research, teaching, learning, practice, and service and improve the quality of life on campus and in the community. The Netter Center works with and serves as a model for other higher education institutions across the United States and around the world.
The Netter Center's university-assisted community schools (UACS) is a strategy to educate, engage, empower, and serve all members of the community in which the school is located and engage students (K-16+) in real world, community problem solving. UACS collaborates with partners to advance teaching, research, learning and service, as well as the civic development of their students.
Duties:
This role involves the planning, coordination, and implementation of UACS Sports programs, including Cross-Grade Sports and school-day PE/Recess support. This position will conduct on-going program communications with K8 school leadership, and direct support of K12 students, staff, and Penn students engaged in the program. This position will manage UACS Sports equipment and supplies for the program, and provide inventory updates. The UACS Sports Coordinator will also document program activities and support program evaluations. This position will oversee Penn Students that engage in the program.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree and 1 to 3 years of experience working with elementary and middle school-aged children or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Experience supporting school-based health initiatives or sports programs. The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of experience specifically engaging a range of K12 youth in sports and fitness activities. A strong candidate will have experience in urban education, supervision, program management and evaluation. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and foster high quality connections and relationships is critical. Must be collaborative, flexible, and work productively with diverse groups. Must be able to engage in sports and fitness activities, stand for long periods of time, and lift heavy objects.
