The Program in Environmental Studies (ES) at Bates College seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in environmental science to begin August 2024. The new faculty member will join ongoing cross-STEM initiatives in inclusive pedagogy and curricular renovation. We are especially interested in individuals trained in environmental science who are comfortable working with other natural scientists as well as with social scientists and humanists. A candidate’s field of study may feature but need not be limited to the following: marine, freshwater, polar, glacial, coastal, agricultural, arid, urban, grassland, or forested systems, or foci that could include earth surface processes, ecology, biodiversity, pollution, energy transitions, or public health. We are open to a broad range of methodological approaches and worldviews that may involve attention to spatial patterns, data visualization, modeling, field studies, traditional ecological knowledge, local ecological knowledge, or the dynamics of social-ecological systems. We seek a candidate who will develop an active scholarly program in their field. We strongly encourage applications from individuals with marginalized identities in environmental science and individuals who may have followed non-traditional pathways to higher education.
The duties of this position include the three main areas of faculty work: teaching, professional achievement, and governance and engagement. The successful teacher-scholar will contribute to an interdisciplinary program in which all students undertake significant coursework in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Teaching responsibilities include five courses per year, which could include the program’s core introductory course in environmental science, mid- and upper-level electives in the candidate’s fields of interest, upper-division courses in the program core, as well as first-year seminars. All faculty are involved in the mentoring of undergraduate research, academic advising, and senior thesis advising.
