Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Senior Writer and Multimedia Producer plays a critical role in telling the Wharton story and deepening engagement with our alumni and donors. This is done through compelling content development including: remarks, email communications, photography, video production, and web content. This position will undertake a wide range of storytelling for strategic markets. Projects include leading writing initiatives and production of content for print and electronic assets, treatment and script writing for film projects, and film production. Some of these projects include: meeting with philanthropic alumni to conduct interviews and tell their stories, writing Dean's and leadership remarks for conferences, alumni events, and global forums; event marketing outreach; impactful storytelling in various communication platforms, strategic marketing and cultivation of materials to support fundraising efforts, annual fund solicitations, and other projects and deliverables as needed. The Senior Writer and Multimedia Producer leads and engages the WHEA team in a creative process to identify new ways to celebrate and tell the authentic human stories of alumni, sharing their aspirations, challenges, and impact. To support organizational goals and initiatives, the Senior Writer and Multimedia Producer curates, shoots, produces and edits content, develops an editorial calendar, and sources, plans, and executes deliverables in collaboration with internal and agency partners. A key member of Wharton's Communications team —part of the division of External Affairs—and is expected to work collaboratively and partner with colleagues across the Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead the production of all multi-media initiatives for WHEA.
Manage and drive all aspects of the video production process:
conceptualizing, pre-production, planning, logistics, shooting, and
editing.
- Collaborate on content development with the Communications
team and WH Magazine. This includes developing and writing remarks,
email communications, newsletters, social media posts, website
content, film treatments, and scripts supporting Wharton External
Affairs' mission and vision.
- Contribute to creative process, working collaboratively
within the department and partners across the School and University
to support alumni engagement and fundraising.
- Manage multiple communications projects in fulfillment of
strategic communications plan.
- Provide multimedia, writing, proofing, and communication
consultation and support to all WHEA partners.
- Manage external vendor(s), work-study student(s) and
freelance writer(s). Assign projects and initiatives as
needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism,
marketing, advertising or a related field and 5-7 years of
experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is
required.
- Strengths in persuasive writing and annual fund writing a
plus.
- The ability to internalize and tell the story of the Wharton
brand and to communicate those values across a spectrum of media
(including but not limited to print, email, web, video, social
media, speech, and interactive displays) is
essential.
- The ideal candidate is passionate about the written word in
all its forms and is adept at writing succinct and energetic
marketing copy as they are generating eloquent narrative
prose.
- Experience working with graphic designers to create
communications in which copy and visuals come together for maximum
impact is a plus.
- The candidate must possess a keen attention to detail to
ensure that all communications are free of errors.
- This candidate must also be able to efficiently process and
respond to feedback as well as constructively partner with
colleagues, maintaining open lines of communication to ensure
projects are completed on time and to the highest level of
quality.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office is required; familiarity with
communications tools such as content management systems, email,
social media, and project management platforms is strongly
preferred.
- The position will require occasional evening and weekend
work.
