Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in literacy, including the foundations of reading, for the elementary and early childhood education programs. The candidate will be expected to integrate evidenced-based practices aligned with the current science of reading to create teaching and learning opportunities that:
1. Support development of content and pedagogical knowledge in
phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, including the modeling of effective teaching strategies that aid in differentiated instruction at the PK-6 level.
2. Facilitate the capacity to work with students who are culturally and linguistically diverse, by demonstrating a commitment to understanding and addressing issues of equity and diversity related to reading and literacy education.
3. Foster the development of the professional dispositions for teaching.
Other responsibilities include supervision of field experiences and collaborating with program faculty to revise course content as necessary. All classes and field experiences are conducted face-to-face on the Auburn University campus and in local schools.

Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (tenure track, nine-month contract) at a salary commensurate with experience and other qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications for Assistant Professor Applicants:
Applications must have:
· The candidate must have an earned doctorate in Elementary Education, Reading/Literacy, Early Childhood, Special Education, or a closely related field from an accredited university at the time of employment.
· A minimum of 18 graduate-level hours in literacy coursework
· Demonstrated expertise in the current science of reading.
· Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy, foundations of reading, and elementary or early childhood education with a commitment to equity and diversity.
· A minimum of three years of full-time classroom teaching experience at the PK-6 level.
· Research experience in reading/literacy education
· A demonstrated ability to collaborate with local school administrations, teachers, students, and community members.

Required Qualifications for Associate Professor Applicants:
Applications must have:
· Each of the required qualifications listed above for assistant professor candidates.
· Been promoted to the rank of associate professor or higher at an accredited institution of higher education.
· Been conferred tenure at an accredited institution of higher education.
· Demonstrated a track-record of research and scholarship in Reading Education.
· Developed an emerging national reputation in Reading Education.
· Mentorship experience with graduate students.
· Demonstrated experience in program development.

Desired Qualifications

Desired Qualifications for Assistant Professor Applicants:
Desired qualifications include:
· Experience obtaining external funding to support teaching and scholarship.
· Teacher education curriculum development experience
· Knowledge of and experience with education policy related to the current science of reading (e.g., Alabama Literacy Act)
· Training in LETRS (or other formal training in phonological awareness and phonics).
· Extensive classroom experience teaching reading in settings serving English language learners or with additional coursework in ESOL education.
Desired Qualifications for Associate Professor Applicants:
Desired qualifications include:
· Experience mentoring doctoral students.
· National or International recognition for research/scholarship in Reading Education.
· Experience obtaining external funding to support teaching and scholarship.
· Demonstrated success developing and implementing community-based reading programs to PK-6 learners.
· Knowledge of and experience with education policy related to the current science of reading (e.g., Alabama Literacy Act)
· Training in LETRS (or other formal training in phonological awareness and phonics).
Extensive classroom experience teaching reading in settings serving English language learners or with additional coursework in ESOL education
