Assistant Professor of Sociology and Anthropology (Tenure-track)

The Department of Sociology & Anthropology at DePauw University invites applications for a tenure-track position in cultural anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2024. A Ph.D. in anthropology (by the time of appointment) is preferred; ABD also will be considered at the rank of Instructor. The successful candidate will have an innovative research agenda and teaching experience related to Indigenous North America. Potential specializations include, but are not limited to, Indigenous language revitalization and reclamation; anti- and decolonial social and political movements; visual and expressive culture; the relationship between Indigeneity and Blackness; law and social justice; religion, belief systems, and wisdom traditions; land, dispossession, and migration; and political economy. We seek an anthropologist who works collaboratively with Indigenous North American communities in a way that can contribute substantively to emerging national conversations on Indigenous rights, respect, and partnerships.

Candidates must be able to contribute to teaching the following courses in the anthropology core curriculum: introductory cultural anthropology; ethnographic methods; anthropological theory; and senior seminar. We seek candidates with pedagogical commitments to racial and social justice. A commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts setting and evidence of effective teaching are essential along with an ongoing commitment to inclusive pedagogy and high-impact practices in teaching and learning. The teaching responsibilities include three courses per semester, in addition to a half-credit course taught every third year during DePauw’s January or May term.
