Nazarbayev University is an innovative institution delivering world-class teaching and research. Located in Astana, it is the product of a ground-breaking partnership between the Republic of Kazakhstan and several of the world’s leading research universities. From its inception in 2010, Nazarbayev University’s ambition has been to be an intellectual leader for Kazakhstan and the wider Central Asia region with a mission to educate and nurture the future leaders of the country and beyond. The University has served as trailblazer for higher education reforms in Kazakhstan. With the recent graduation of its 9th cohort, there are now close to 9,000 alumni. Current students number over 7,000, some twothirds of whom pursue undergraduate studies. Two thirds of all students are enrolled in STEMM disciplines. Today, alumni are found in graduate programs of top international universities and/ or top international and domestic firms. Faculty hail from about 60 countries, research intensity has shot up. Nazarbayev University has become a national brand. Academic freedom and institutional autonomy are anchored in a bespoke Nazarbayev University Law, and merit-based admission and progression, rigorous application of academic and research integrity, integration of teaching and research, transparency, and emphasis on developing civic mindedness constitute some of the University’s foundational values. An international outlook and enterprising spirit are fundamental characteristics of the institution. The language of instruction and research is English.

Nazarbayev University is seeking to appoint a new President, who will be its Chief Executive Officer. Reporting to its Board of Trustees, the President will be the face of the University, and assisted by the Provost (Chief Academic Officer) and the Managing Council, oversees the activities of seven Schools, a Center for Preparatory Studies, a thriving medical practice (NU Medicine), and an emerging innovation cluster. He or she will play the key role in representing the University externally, sustaining its relationship with the government and establishing the University’s reputation in the region and beyond.

Candidates will bring a strong track record of leadership in a multidisciplinary and research-focused university. Candidates will have profound experience in the management of growth and organisational change, and they will be internationalists with experience of more than one university system. Strong general management skills are essential, as is proven ability as a communicator to multiple audiences. Candidates will model the energy and vision of the University as a whole, both expressing the potential and ambition of Kazakhstan and connecting it to the wider world.
