AVP for Operations, Finance and Administration

Yale University is committed to improving the world today and for future generations through outstanding research and scholarship, education, preservation, and practice. Yale educates aspiring leaders worldwide who serve all sectors of society. The University carries out this mission through the free exchange of ideas in an ethical, interdependent, and diverse community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Since its founding in 1701, Yale has been home to countless leaders and experts across national, disciplinary, and political boundaries and contributed immeasurably to innovation in the arts, humanities, social science, and sciences. Yale’s resounding charge is to be the global research university most committed to teaching, and the University is continuing to enrich its educational environment and advance its academic excellence by drawing people from all backgrounds and walks of life.

The Assistant Vice President for Operations, Finance and Administration (“AVP”) position was newly created to accelerate the strategies of the operations team. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Operations, the AVP is a strategic leader and partner to the Operations Leadership Team and will lead a phased integration of the finance and administrative activities across multiple units including the following: Facilities, Campus Development and Sustainability, Information Technology, Finance and Audit, Human Resources, Hospitality, Public Safety, Administration, and New Haven Affairs and University Properties.

The AVP serves as the chief financial steward and leader of administrative support services for this large and complex operation with more than $700 million in annual expense and more than $600 million in annual capital spending, impacting every unit on campus. The AVP identifies, mobilizes, and optimizes financial and other resources to help advance the mission of the University, the Operations Team, and ensures that the respective staff receive high quality financial and administrative support in a manner compliant with university policies and procedures. This leadership position serves as an ambassador and champion in creating a collegial, collaborative, and effective culture and climate throughout the departments they support. The implementation of the new structure is anticipated to be completed in several phases. In phase one, the AVP will work directly with the Vice President for Facilities, Campus Development and Sustainability, the largest unit in Operations, to build a plan to scale up capital development, improve daily operating practices, upgrade processes and technology, and develop clear performance metrics. The intent is to have the comprehensive structure in place over a 12- to 18-month period of time in which the AVP is immersed in facilities, while planning for the next phase of the role.

The AVP ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of administrative and financial services resident within Operations, ensuring high-quality delivery of administrative services by providers outside Operations. They establish, monitor, and meet, or exceed, targets for operational excellence, identifying and implementing opportunities to achieve continuous improvement of processes by building and managing a team of high-performance administrative and financial professionals.
