About the Department/College

The Yuma Branch Campus of Northern Arizona University in Yuma, AZ is located on the grounds of Arizona Western College and serves a vital and growing local and regional community. NAU-Yuma has a primary role in providing a wide range of bachelor and graduate degrees in the Lower Colorado River region of Arizona and California with approximately 500 students on campus and an additional 1500 students engaged in distance learning programs.

The Department of Educational Psychology is located within the College of Education and offers a PhD in Combined Counseling/School Psychology, Ed.S. in School Psychology, and Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Counseling-School Counseling, Counseling-Student Affairs, and Human Relations. The Department of Educational Psychology has accredited degree programs in statewide locations.

About the Position

The Department of Educational Psychology (EPS) is seeking to fill an Assistant Clinical Professor position beginning in August 2023. The position is a 9-month non-tenure track faculty line with the opportunity for summer course teaching; and is located at the Yuma campus. The successful candidates will have a specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and will have enthusiasm for teaching at the graduate level and for training culturally responsive and ethical counselors to serve the needs of communities in Arizona and beyond.

The position is connected to the Department of Educational Psychology and based at our Yuma Campus within the Department of Educational Psychology. This position is renewable, based upon effective performance, availability of funds, and program needs, with the possibility of a multiple-year appointment. The appointment will begin in the Fall 2023 academic semester.

Responsibilities Include:
  1. Teach graduate counseling classes (including practicum and internship) for the EPS programs, focusing on the CACREP accredited MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling program
  2. Teach in-person, blended, and online courses
  3. Assist in recruiting and advising counseling students
  4. Fulfill service responsibilities to the department, college, and the profession
  5. Work collaboratively with schools and agencies to coordinate practicum and internship experiences for counseling students


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Earned Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from an accredited CACREP program by date of hire - OR - meet CACREP criteria for Core Faculty
  2. One year of college teaching experience (can include college teaching as a graduate assistant)
  3. Minimum of one year applied experience in the field of Counseling, with background/experience in mental health agencies or schools
  4. Licensed/certified or eligible for licensure/certification as a Professional Counselor in Arizona and/or willing to seek licensure/certification as a Professional Counselor in Arizona


Preferred Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated success in teaching graduate level courses in the area of counseling and/or counselor education
  2. Experience in supervising practicum and internships, and teaching multicultural counseling, counseling theories, and counseling processes
  3. Active involvement or leadership roles in counseling related professional associations
  4. Experience in networking/collaborating with schools and/or agencies


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills in theories and techniques of counseling.
  • Ability or strong interest in recruiting, advising, and mentoring graduate students.
  • Ability to work with graduate students on research projects.
  • Promotes a diverse, inclusive environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English/Spanish.


Compensation & Benefits

Commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Pre-Employment Check

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
