The Assistant Dean of Equity, Justice and Engagement serves as a partner to the Dean to build upon efforts to address structural racism in the legal profession and law school, including access, curriculum, classroom dynamics, hiring practices, student professional development and alumni/bar relations. The Assistant Dean participates in decision-making impacting all Law School operations to achieve equity within and among constituencies, recruit a diverse student body, liaise with pipeline programs, achieve career success for all students, and achieve true engagement by every Seton Hall Law constituency. The Assistant Dean participates in strategy development to achieve student academic, professional and social success, including academic standing, bar preparation, and financial aid policies. The Assistant Dean collaborates with appropriate members of the law school community to (a) maintain a diverse community and provide cultural competency and equity training to students, faculty, staff, and administration; (b) host programs and speakers appropriate to the issues of the day as well as equity and social justice goals; (c) support LEO fellows; (d) execute reporting obligations with external organizations and the University.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Faculty: The Assistant Dean of Equity, Justice, and Engagement works with Dean, Associate Deans and faculty to strategize, develop programs, and implement new activities that achieve diversity and a community whose hallmarks are equity and belongingness. This collaboration will produce valuable insight into issues of diversity, the process of institutional change and the current status of diversity at Seton Hall Law. It will report on best practices and collaborate with the Dean in preparing quarterly reports that integrate trends of concern and SHUL311 data. As necessary, the Assistant Dean will work with faculty to host pedagogy workshops. Provides advice on faculty hiring to ensure hiring practices that are equitable, helping to produce a diverse pool of candidates and finalists. When needed, the Assistant Dean counsels faculty on classroom dynamics issues.

2. Administration: Attend meetings to support the infusion of equity considerations in all policy and operational aspects of Law School operations. In collaboration with the Dean and relevant constituencies, develop an annual equity, justice and engagement workplan setting goals for the academic year, and working collaboratively to achieve its execution. As assigned by the Dean, work collaboratively with administrative colleagues to identify and achieve DEI goals, including but not limited to, compliance with federal and state law, University policy, and ABA requirements. Serve as Title IX coordinator for the Law School, working in collaboration with the University's Office of Compliance and Risk Management, as a member of the Students of Concern Committee, ex-officio member of the LEO Admissions Committee, and other committees as directed by the Dean. Provide oversight of the Pre-Legal Program.

3. Student Advising: Advise students with a special focus on advising and addressing the concerns of students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds (e.g. religious, socioeconomic, racial, gender/sexual identity, political; immigrants, veterans and individuals with disabilities). Work with the Associate Dean for Academics, the Assistant Dean of Experiential Learning and the Assistant Dean of Student Services in developing programs for faculty, students and staff that promote cultural competency and civil discourse and that explore the intersection of social justice, diversity, and inclusion. Examples include sensitivity and cultural competence trainings, community discussions, academic symposia, affinity group receptions and celebrations, and alumni/a networking events. Partner with faculty and deans to enhance classroom climate and pedagogy. As requested, participate in the LEO program. As appropriate, advocate for the interests of individual students and student groups. Being a ubiquitous presence and voice within the Law School to further the school's DEI goals and regularly assess and measure the Law School's success in achieving its goals. Together with faculty advisors, facilitate student engagement with affinity bar organizations, and, as necessary, serve as surrogate for the Dean at Bar-related functions.

4. Admissions: Partner with Admissions to enhance the pipeline and recruitment of applicants from underrepresented backgrounds. For example, this may include speaking at select Admissions Seminars and Open House programs and events (travel, evening and weekend hours required). Provide individual and group admissions counseling sessions/campus tours.

5. Alumni and External Relations: Partner with the Dean and Assistant Dean of Alumni & Development to engage alumni from diverse backgrounds and strengthen relationships with affinity Bar organizations.

6. Career Services: Partner with Career Services to ensure that students from underrepresented backgrounds understand the breadth of their opportunities and have the skills to identify career paths and employers that will enhance their growth and success in the legal profession.
