Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Physics
The Williams College Department of Physics invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, with teaching duties starting September 2024. A more senior appointment may be possible in exceptional circumstances. We seek a theoretical or computational physicist eager to teach throughout the undergraduate physics curriculum and to involve undergraduates in research. Startup funds will be available.
Our department has nine full-time members and graduates approximately twenty majors annually, the majority of whom pursue advanced study or careers in physics or a related field. Current research areas include experimental atomic physics, particle physics, and hard and soft condensed matter; theoretical biophysics, particle physics, and quantum information; and observational astronomy. For more information see http://physics.williams.edu .
We are interested in candidates who will contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of our academic community through their teaching, research, and service, and who are committed to working effectively with a diverse student population. We strongly encourage applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the field. Our department makes it a high priority to support incoming faculty as they adapt to their new professional responsibilities. Furthermore, Williams offers faculty participation in the college’s professional development program First3 and in the NCFDD Faculty Success Program, along with support through the newly established Rice Center for Teaching .
Qualifications
A Ph.D. (or ABD) in Physics or a closely related field is required. Postdoctoral experience is desirable.
Application Instructions
Applications should be submitted via Interfolio ( http://apply.interfolio.com/129273 ) and should include a cover letter, a c.v., a research statement that details plans for undergraduate involvement, a teaching statement, and at least three letters of reference. In a separate statement, please address or elaborate on your commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; you might also highlight any relevant service or outreach efforts. There may naturally be an overlap between this and other parts of the application.
Applications completed by October 15th will receive full consideration. First-round interviews will be conducted in video format in early November, with campus visits for finalists in late November and early December. All offers of employment are contingent upon completion of a background check; further information is available here .
