General Biology Lab Assistant

This position will assist the General Biology Lab Coordinator with all aspects of the efficient operation of General Biology laboratories.

Duties/Responsibilities

Laboratory Preparation & Breakdown:
  • Working cooperatively with General Biology Lab Coordinator, the General Biology Lab Assistant assists in setting up and breaking down general biology laboratories.

  • Assists in the preparation of all laboratory materials for General Biology I and II labs.

  • Manages proper growth conditions for successful completion of laboratory exercises involving live specimens.

  • Keeps teaching laboratories fully stocked and functional.

  • Tests laboratory media and materials to assure laboratory exercises will function properly.

  • Stores and works with laboratory materials, both chemical and biological, in accordance with safe laboratory practices.

  • Cleans laboratory benches and supplies between laboratory sections and upon completion of labs each week.

Laboratory Coordination:
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and communicates present and potential problems concerning laboratory preparations or the student use of laboratories to the General Biology Lab Coordinator.

  • Recommends updates and improvements for General Biology Laboratories and collaborates effectively with instructors and the General Biology Lab Coordinator to modify or create new laboratory exercises.

  • Instructs part-time lab instructors on proper execution of laboratory exercises and/or techniques.

  • Attends monthly AHEC Environmental Health and Safety meetings and adheres to safety guidelines.

  • Assists in maintaining chemical inventory and tracking database of all purchased chemicals in accordance with AHEC guidelines.

  • Trains laboratory instructors and lab personnel in proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and laboratory safety procedures.

Laboratory Teaching:
  • Teaches at least one General Biology I or II Laboratory section per

semester (fall and spring). This includes all aspects of laboratory

instruction, including pre-lab lectures, laboratory set-up and

demonstrations, preparation, and grading of lab practical exams,

writing and grading quizzes, and assignment of final course grades

by established university deadlines.
  • Teaches additional lab sections as needed on an emergency basis to cover for instructors who are out with illness or an emergency.

Train Student Lab Assistants:
  • Under the direction of the General Biology Lab Coordinator assist in the training of student lab assistants to prepare media, reagents, and lab supplies; set-up and breakdown lab materials; clean lab benches, glassware, equipment, etc.; proper use of laboratory equipment; laboratory safety and proper handling of bio-hazardous and chemical waste.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Biology or closely related field.

  • General Biology lab experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Broad training in biology including cell/molecular biology, evolution, botany, zoology, and ecology.

  • Previous successful teaching experience in General Biology I and II or in specialized courses whose content is included in General

  • Biology (cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, evolution, zoology, botany, ecology).

  • Experience with laboratory preparation and breakdown.

  • Experience with laboratory coordination.

  • Experience providing training in general laboratory practices.

Work Hours: Work schedule may include days, evenings, and weekends. This position is 100% on campus.

Salary for Announcement
The salary range for this position is $41,200 - $51,500. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, training, and qualifications.
