About the Position

The School of Informatics, Computing and Cyber Systems invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Practice in the area of Electrical Engineering (EE) to support an exciting joint dual degree program with the Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications (CQUPT) in beautiful Chongqing, China. The specific goal of the program is to prepare CQUPT students to be successful in electrical engineering coursework taught in English. NAU faculty teach eight EE classes delivered in English during the first three years of the CQUPT student's undergraduate EE program, before students transfer to NAU in Flagstaff, Arizona for their final year, receiving a dual degree from CQUPT and NAU. This position is non-tenure-track and begins in August 2023, pending negotiations. Classes in Chongqing are 12 weeks long, starting in early September and again in late February, and faculty live and work in Chongqing, China, during those times. This position will spend half a year in China and half a year in the U.S. Faculty rotate back to the Flagstaff campus to teach classes at NAU in SICCS as program needs dictate. Several NAU faculty work together to support classes at CQUPT. Faculty will develop supplementary learning materials for use at both locations and perform learning outcome assessments in support of ABET accreditation. 50% or greater international travel required. The ability and willingness to live and work in Chongqing, China for extended periods of time is required of this position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a closely-related field from a university where English is the instructional language,
  • An earned Master's or Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or closely-related field or in Education from a university where English is the instructional language, and
  • A combination of three years of professional experience working as an electrical, electronics, or computer hardware engineer in industry, and/or three years teaching electrical or computer engineering at the college level.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of substantial and high-quality teaching in Electrical or Computer Engineering at the undergraduate college level,
  • A Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Education, or a closely-related field
  • Evidence of effective communication skills in English

Compensation & Benefits

Commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
