POSITION TITLE:      Associate Provost and Dean of Interdisciplinary Studies

DEPARTMENT:          Academic Affairs

WORK LOCATION:   In-person, onsite

REPORTS TO:           Provost and Senior Vice President

FLSA STATUS:          Full-time, Exempt

SALARY:                    $150,000 – $175,000


Reporting directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President (PSVP), the Associate Provost and Dean of Interdisciplinary Studies (APDIS) provides high-level, comprehensive, and confidential advice and assistance to the PSVP on a broad range of academic and administrative issues, both internal and external to the campus requiring the exercise of judgment and independent initiative.

The APDIS works closely with the PSVP to develop, implement, and administer campus-wide policies, plans, and programs in alignment with WSCUC standards; liaises and enhances communication with senior management, faculty, community, university, and governmental organizations; serves as a resource to the Deans and Faculty; acts as a facilitator with academic units; represents the PSVP to internal and external constituents; promotes the success of all students and helps NDNU to demonstrate its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; assists with campus accreditation activities; and serves as a member of the Executive Management Team (EMT).

This position will lead the university's development and implementation of interdisciplinary programs and initiatives. The APDIS will work closely with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to promote collaboration across disciplines and will serve as a champion for the value of interdisciplinary education.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES  

    Interdisciplinary Studies

  • Provide leadership and oversight for developing and implementing interdisciplinary programs and initiatives at the university to support enrollment growth.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to promote interdisciplinary research, teaching, and learning across the university.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to support interdisciplinary teaching and research, including assessment and evaluation of interdisciplinary programs.
  • Work with other deans and administrators to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and identify cross-disciplinary initiatives opportunities.
  • Serve as program director for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion master's program (fully online).
  • Promote the value of interdisciplinary education to various internal and external stakeholders, including students, faculty, donors, and community partners.

 

Leadership, Management, and Programming

  • Serve as a liaison for the PSVP in interactions with the deans and faculty.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Coordinate and monitor assignments that must be accomplished in conjunction with other key administrators.
  • Help plan and arrange special events for faculty and campus events (e.g., Convocation).
  • Undertake and manage special projects as assigned by the PSVP.

 

Accreditation

  • Maintain current knowledge of WSCUC standards and processes; analyze the impact of new regulations on campus operations and make recommendations to Provost for any required operational changes.
  • Assist Provost in the planning and implementing WSCUC accreditation review processes, including report preparation, logistics for site visits, and follow-up actions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of WSCUC substantive change policies and procedures; support the development/submission of WSCUC substantive change proposals (new programs, online programs, and off-campus programs) and ensure all follow-up required actions for implementation, evaluation, and notification to WSCUC.
  • Ensure completion of annual WSCUC reports and similar accreditation-related reports as may be required in consultation with the Director of Institutional Research.
  • Support deans in securing and maintaining disciplinary/professional accreditation and meeting reporting requirements.

 

Assessment and Quality Assurance

  • Maintain currency with national developments for best practices in academic assessment and of WSCUC standards and processes for assessment of student learning and institutional effectiveness and ensures university assessment policies and procedures are in accord with accreditation standards.
  • Oversee the academic program review process in consultation with governance committees and deans to ensure comprehensive and timely review, external reviews, and campus meetings with the provost and president.

 

Online Education

  • Provide coordination with deans for distance education programs to ensure infrastructure support for program quality and student success. Support faculty in the transition to online teaching with the help of university instructional designers.
  • Troubleshoot, when necessary, with campus offices to ensure quality delivery of distance education.
  • Work with deans to develop and implement a plan for assessing the overall quality of student online learning.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND COMPETENCIES

  • A doctoral degree from an accredited institution focused on interdisciplinary studies or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in higher education administration with a focus on interdisciplinary studies is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing interdisciplinary programs and initiatives, including experience with program design, curriculum development, and assessment.
  • Appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience managing sensitive issues with keen judgment, diplomacy, tact, and confidentiality.
  • An understanding of the importance of, and demonstrated success in, promoting diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a leadership team member.
