Reporting to the VC-CFO, Information Technology Services (ITS) delivers Enterprise information technology services to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) under the leadership of the campus Chief Information Officer (CIO). Information Technology Services (IT Services) uses world-class services and technologies to empower UC San Diego's mission to transform California and the world as a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university. The Office of Information Assurance (OIA) (a department within ITS) is responsible for the infrastructure, policies, standards and training necessary to ensure the achievement of the security and privacy goals of the University. Collaborating closely with various campus resources and partners, including campus counsel, health and campus privacy officers, and research compliance, to respond to and mitigate cybersecurity and information assurance risks, threats and vulnerabilities.
The Executive Director and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) establishes UC San Diego’s information security ecosystem, aligning security technologies, processes and activities throughout the organization. They build relationships across the campus with faculty and administration in Academic Affairs, UC San Diego Health Sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego Supercomputer Center and distributed IT groups to enact strong but flexible security policies, technologies, standards and practices that balance academic freedom and the university’s mission of research and education with the need to manage risk and protect critical university resources and data. They recommend information security policy changes to UC and within UC San Diego, lead information security governance groups, and represent UC San Diego on UC systemwide committees, NH-ISAC, REN-ISAC and others. They proactively establish relationships with UC, local and federal law enforcement and collaborate as appropriate. The Executive Director and CISO serves as a member of the Senior Management Team reporting to the Chief Information Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in information assurance and cybersecurity
• Expert knowledge of information technology security functional areas and as it relates to student data; health information; research subjects; finance (including credit card and loan transactions); management of IT resources and applications; and general computer use practices.
• Expert understanding of privacy and security regulations and best practices, including federal and state laws, policies and standards, as well as extensive knowledge about a wide range of privacy / security regulations relevant to higher education and / or medical center and patient information.
• Demonstrated management expertise in determining and recommending actions, for organization departments, to follow in IT security and privacy matters.
• Demonstrated experience with information security practices and technologies for advanced academic research environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
• CISSP and/or CISM certification
• Security Clearance: Secret or ability to obtain this clearance
• Advanced degree in information assurance and cybersecurity
