Director of Risk Management and Insurance Services

 

 

 

Coastal Carolina University seeks an experienced, dynamic leader to serve as its Director of Risk Management and Insurance Services. The Director of Risk Management and Insurance Services is responsible for providing strategic leadership, direction, and management for the University’s risk management and insurance programs. The Risk Management and Insurance Services Department supports the mission of the university by creating innovative risk management solutions, delivering quality service and recommendations to address established and emerging risk, assisting in loss prevention and minimization, administering a robust insurance portfolio, enhancing organizational resilience and continuity capabilities, and providing proactive management and identification of risk and mitigation opportunities.

The Director is responsible for envisioning, creating, managing and constantly improving risk management programs with an emphasis on addressing the distinctive activities of an institution of higher education. The director seeks to protect the University and the University community from risks that range from legal to physical to financial to reputational to technological, and many sources of risk beyond those just mentioned. The director is responsible for creating a strategic vision with a holistic risk perspective that drives the evolution of CCU’s risk management program. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Resilience, the director will assist with enterprise and subdivision projects and initiatives to support the resilience mission and foster a risk-conscious culture.

 

 

 

Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Responsible for the negotiation and purchase of all insurance on behalf of the University, the Coastal Research Foundation, the Horry County Commission on Higher Education, the Belle W. Baruch Institute for South Carolina Studies; and the coordination of insurance purchase for the Chanticleer Athletic Foundation. Coverage areas include property and casualty, auto comprehensive, collision, and liability; business interruption; commercial crime; cyber liability; directors and officers; general tort liability; data processing, general equipment and inland marine; ocean marine, aviation; professional medical malpractice; international travel, tort liability; medical evacuation and repatriation; student accident policy; clubs and organization liability; and employed lawyer professional liability; Responsible for evaluation declaration pages, reviews endorsements and exclusions, and controls additions and deletions to all current inventory or census information; Responsible for maintaining a professional working relationship with all outside insurance brokers and agents, staff associated with the South Carolina Insurance Reserve Fund, and internal stakeholders; Performs a regular review of risk identification practices, analysis, treatment, monitoring/reviewing risk, and correction actions in order to develop and maintain a holistic, comprehensive risk management framework and administer an enterprise risk management strategy in alignment with the University’s strategic plan and objectives, resilience vision, and applicable risk management principles; Collaborates with University departments and units on the development, continuous improvement, and maintenance of University institutional policies, plans, and procedures designed to mitigate, minimize and/or eliminate sources of risk to the University and the campus community. Serves as a member of the CCU emergency operations organization and actively participates with all-hazards mitigation program activities and stakeholder readiness programs, and works in the CCU emergency operations center, when appropriate; Administers the University’s Workers Compensation Program for University employees, student employees, unpaid interns, volunteers and service learning participants; Collaborates with the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) to process international insurance registrations and file claims with the University’s international insurance provider; Collaborates with various departments, including University Counsel, Financial Services, Facilities Planning and Management, University Housing, Procurement, and Student Affairs to assess various types of contracts (e.g., leases, facility use agreements, license agreements, affiliation agreements, professional services contracts, etc.); Collaborates with the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) to process international insurance registrations and file claims with the University’s international insurance provider; and Manages the departmental budget and directs the daily operation of the Risk Management and Insurances Services Department. Supervises staff, establishing and clearly communicating primary responsibilities and expected performance outcomes. Completes performance appraisals and performs supervisory roles according to University policy. Models, promotes, and ensures exceptional customer service delivery to all constituents.

 

 

Required Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in business, finance, insurance, risk management or a related field and a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant progressive experience as a risk management and/or insurance professional, including four (4) years minimum of supervisory and program administration roles in the risk management and/or insurance field is required.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications: Other advanced degrees or applicable professional certifications in insurance and risk management and relative work experience in the public sector is preferred.

 

 

 

Licensure: The following professional certifications/designations will be considered with a combination of education and experience: Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Associate in Risk Management-Enterprise Risk Management (ARM-E), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in General Insurance (AINS), Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS), Associate in Claims (AIC), and The Risk Management Society Certified Risk Management Professional (RIMS-CRMP).

Risk Management & Compliance Manager I (AF30/61121693/FTE-S00889P), full-time position with benefits.  SC State Pay Band: 08.  Salary range:  $66,892.00 (minimum) - $95,327.00 (midpoint).  Normal work hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Friday, 8:00am to 12:30pm. Must be flexible to meet the special scheduling needs of the university.
