JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Development/Athletics leads fundraising efforts, stewardship activities, and fundraising related events for the Athletics division. Reporting jointly to the Assistant Vice President for Athletics and the Vice-President of Advancement, this position is intended to build a culture of engagement and philanthropy among alumni, parents and friends and will engage in major gift and annual fundraising to forward the needs of the division. The position will also carry the working title Associate Director of Athletics.

  MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively with the Assistant Vice-President for Athletics and the Vice-President of Advancement to create a comprehensive and coordinated strategic plan for development and stewardship
  • In coordination with the MU Director of Alumni and Annual Fund and the Athletics coaches, design a synchronized annual fund effort that targets alumni, parents and friends to provide much needed unrestricted support
  • In coordination with the MU Director of Prospect Research, work to identify new sources of potential philanthropic support with potential donors and to cultivate those sources via strategically planned outreach and stewardship development 
  • Maintain an active cultivation, solicitation and stewardship schedule for major gift (five and six-figure) prospects and donors, aiming for 15 to 20 targeted, quality contacts each month
  • Collaborate with Athletics administration and coordinate with Advancement to cultivate and solicit leadership gifts, and maximize development opportunities
  • Develop, write and submit major gifts proposals
  • Design and implement an annual fund plan working with the MU Athletic staff to maximize the number of annual donors and annual gift receipts for athletics. Key among the deliverables will be the implementation of an Athletics leadership annual giving group
  • Attend athletics meetings and divisional activities as advised by the Athletic Director, as well as select meetings with the advancement staff. Provide regular activity reports to the Assistant Vice President for Athletics and Vice President for Advancement
  • Mange annual Athletics Hall of Fame and other relevant development related Athletic events
 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education                                          

Bachelor’s degree required.

 

Experience                                        

Four to seven years of experience in development and/or athletics, preferably in higher education. Demonstrated experience in building relationships with alumni, parents and donors

 

Licenses or Certifications            

Valid Driver’s License

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse constituencies including alumni, faculty colleagues, and staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills required, with the ability to successfully manage multiple projects
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to use Blackbaud Raiser's Edge or willingness to learn
 

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Ability to travel; heavy lifting required (50 pounds and over); may be required to work when the university is closed during snow emergencies.
