The Department of Communications at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Academic Year) with the appointment starting in Fall 2024.

Journalism Program
The Journalism Program at CSUDH is accredited by the Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) and meets their high standards of journalistic practices, skills, and specializations with a strong focus on analytical reasoning, critical thinking and problem solving. The program provides a broad-based curriculum designed to promote news and information literacy; proficiency in the various journalistic forms and styles; an understanding of the new media landscape; and information dissemination practices through contemporary and emerging media tools. The program is committed to freedom of the press, freedom of expression, freedom of inquiry, and the questioning of dominant institutional practices and ideologies. It encourages dedication to ethical practices including truth, accuracy, fairness, diversity, inclusivity, and independence.
The program further provides an understanding of media representations of gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, and encourages professional practice that respects all forms of diversity. It trains students to be sensitive to and provide a voice for underserved populations and communities; works in the public interest; and encourages community engagement and social responsibility to audiences and the society at large.

The Position
Tenure-Track faculty in the Journalism Program teach three to four undergraduate courses per semester. They are expected to engage in scholarly and/or professional activities, and perform service to the department, college, university and the community.
The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Journalism or Mass Communication by the time of appointment. We will consider a candidate with a master’s degree who has professional broadcast journalism or extensive news production experience. The candidate must have prior professional experience in and be able to teach broadcast journalism and other journalism courses at the undergraduate level. Further, the ideal candidate will possess the mentoring skills to advise the student newspaper and/or other journalism products and engage in extracurricular activities. The successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to teaching a diverse student population. Therefore, the candidate should demonstrate cultural competence to engage with CSUDH’s diverse and ethnically balanced student population. Cultural competence may be reflected in the candidate’s pedagogy, research, and/or professional practice.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will possess the teaching and professional experience needed to teach three to four courses per semester in the Journalism degree program. The candidate will have a record of scholarship within the communications field, preferably within the field of journalism, broadcast journalism, or multimedia journalism. A candidate who has a master’s and extensive professional journalism experience will be expected to sustain an outstanding and ongoing record of professional activities in that field. Additional duties may include: 1) teaching broadcast journalism classes; 2) advise student news products, such as the Bulletin or Bulletin TV; 3) advise our journalism club, the Society for Independent Student Journalists (SISJ); 4) participate in assessment, program review, and accreditation initiatives; 5) student advising; 5) mentor our Hollywood Foreign Press Association fellows; and 6) significant service at the department, college, and university levels.

Required Qualifications
Applicants must have experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds. Ph.D. by the time of appointment or a master’s degree in journalism or closely related field with extensive professional journalism experience. Demonstrated success teaching journalism courses with an emphasis on broadcast journalism, multimedia journalism, and news production. Preferred Qualifications

Additional Information
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $5,405 to $11,994 per month (12 monthly payments per academic year); The anticipated hiring salary is $6,750 to $7,084. This position will be commensurate with experience and current CSUDH faculty salaries in the academic department/discipline. Faculty salaries are subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
