The Collaborative Pianist is responsible for assisting faculty by working with and coaching students, and providing piano accompaniment in rehearsals and performances.

Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week, 10-month position, normally scheduled Monday through Friday, but may require work on evenings and weekends, depending upon music course offerings and productions. Daily starting and ending times may be irregular; shift may vary from day-to-day depending on programmatic requirements. For Fall 2021, the candidate should be available for courses scheduled on Mondays from 1:00 - 7:00 p.m., Tuesdays from 1:00 - 4:30 p.m., Thursdays from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m., in addition to coachings and classes scheduled at various times throughout the week.

This position requires in-person and on-campus work. Accordingly, applicants are subject to the Ventura County Community College District Board Policy 3506. All individuals who access on-site campus/district programs in person or who participate in off-site district/college services in person must provide certification of having received an approved COVID-19 vaccine by October 15, 2021.

This is considered a provisional assignment. As such, employees hired in this capacity are considered at will and do not accrue property interest in the assignment.

Representative Duties

  • Sight read, improvise and compose music as necessary;
  • Transpose music from one key to another as required;
  • Perform written accompaniments of assigned repertoire with appropriate attention to stylistic intent;
  • Develop performance-level musical presentations;
  • Provide accompaniment at rehearsals;
  • Assist choral ensemble students in learning the assigned music with melodic and rhythmic accuracy;
  • Coach vocal and instrumental students in individual sessions or sessions with an applied instructor;
  • Coach students in proper interpretation of music;
  • Accompany voice classes in collaboration with a faculty member;
  • Play warm up exercises under direction of a faculty member;
  • Support students with accompaniments which enhance their performance;
  • Accompany soloists and ensembles at day and evening public performances throughout the year;
  • Maintain schedule of private coaching sessions and other rehearsals and performances as required;
  • Prepare repertoire for rehearsals and performance;
  • Create accompaniment tracks as necessary to accommodate remote or hybrid learning;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Working Relationships:
The Collaborative Pianist maintains frequent contact with Music Department faculty and students.

Working Conditions:
Subject to irregular work schedule as required by rehearsals and performances; subject to standing and sitting for extended periods of time (up to 2-3 hours); repetitive use of upper extremities including hand coordination activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Music and extensive knowledge, experience, and training as a choral, vocal, or instrumental collaborative pianist.

Ability to:
Provide piano accompaniment for vocal and instrumental students and ensembles; sight read music from many style periods or musical scores accurately and efficiently; transpose or improvise from a lead sheet; play a piano reduction from a full score as necessary; follow a conductor or soloist accurately; provide coaching to assist students in learning repertoire; plan, organize, and prioritize work; arrive on time to scheduled courses, coachings, and performances; understand and follow oral, written, or gestural directions; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Knowledge of:
Piano performance and accompaniment techniques; practices and techniques of vocal or instrumental coaching; principles and practices of sight reading; playing multiple vocal or instrumental parts from an open score without a notated piano reduction; interpretation, phrasing, and ornamentation appropriate to various musical styles.
