Position Summary
The Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement ( AVPIA ) will provide oversight and coordination of the annual fund and alumni engagement programs, as well as advancement information services for the institution. In addition, the AVPIA will work closely with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement ( VPIA ), in concert with the Board of Directors of the Cortland College Foundation ( CCF ) and SUNY Cortland Alumni Association, to provide key leadership between comprehensive fundraising and engagement campaigns.
Major Responsibilities
• Provide comprehensive leadership and oversight for The Cortland Fund operations, Alumni Engagement and Advancement Information Services, to include direct supervisory responsibility over the Director of The Cortland Fund; the Executive Director of Alumni Engagement; and Director of Advancement Information Services. The AVP will also be responsible for all operational budgets under their unit, which will be coordinated with the VPIA and the Director of Advancement Financial Services for the CCF .
• Collaborate with the Director of The Cortland Fund in developing effective strategies and programs to meet both dollar and participation goals for alumni, students, friends, parents, faculty, staff and emeriti. Assist the director with executing the annual Cortland Challenge day.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director of Alumni Engagement to lead the College’s work in engaging, cultivating and stewarding the relationship between the College its alumni and students. Provide oversight and assist the director with the execution of Alumni Weekend.
• Collaborate, and in consultation with the VPIA, establish annual fundraising goals of the annual fund program and develop alumni engagement metrics that align with Institutional Advancement’s strategic plan.
• Oversee departmental activities related to the College’s strategic plan, including evaluating progress and implementing strategies and initiatives to ensure optimal progress toward goals.
• Work with the director of advancement information services to set annual goals related to data acquisition and prospect research to help support fundraising and engagement efforts.
• In coordination with the Director of Advancement Financial Services, the AVPIA will work to identify opportunities for policy and process clarification, operational efficiency, and auditable gift processing that ensures accuracy and credibility.
• Participate in the development of proposals and applications for funding from corporations and foundations. Work with grant services team to identify potential funders and align funding priorities with needs of the institution. Submit LOI’s, grant applications and proposals on behalf of the Cortland College Foundation, Inc.
• Work collaboratively with the VPIA to provide divisional leadership, including strategic planning, staff development and management.
• In the absence of the VPIA, provide divisional leadership.
• As an AVP, serve on the President’s Advisory Council. Responsibility to the Council will include attendance at meetings with preparations to report on all Institutional Advancement initiatives and progress as it relates to the wider campus community.
• Works closely with the VPIA and the executive leadership of the CCF Board of Directors to establish fundraising goals, engagement strategies for implementation and report progress throughout the year. Regularly attends CCF executive committee meetings, four annual board of directors meetings and four SUNY Cortland Alumni Association Board meetings.
• Will manage a portfolio of 40-50 households of prospects and donors
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
• Reports to the VP for Institutional Advancement
• Serve as supervisor responsibility for annual fund, alumni engagement and advancement information services personnel
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree
• Four years of progressive experience in institutional advancement to include fundraising and engagement experiences
• Demonstrated experience in soliciting and closing gifts
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead a team
• Strong communication skills both verbal and written
• Effective interpersonal skills to develop collaborative working relationships
• Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects and establish goals
• Willingness and ability to travel and work varied hours as needed
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree
• Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors
• Experience with alumni engagement, development, donor relations, fundraising, database services, communications and marketing in higher education
• Comprehensive campaign experience
