Job Description

The Director and Docent (hereafter Docent) for the Solitude-Fraction Site reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Diversity Education & Engagement.

The Docent is the on-site point of contact for the Solitude-Fraction site on the Blacksburg campus of Virginia Tech. The Docent oversees maintenance of the Solitude-Fraction historical site (buildings and grounds), curates and handles exhibitions and tours, trains and supervisors a team of volunteer docents, coordinates programming occurring at the site, and serves in a support role for individuals accessing the site. The Docent approves usage by campus and community groups in compliance with University regulations and the National Register of Historic Places, and collaborates with the assigned building manager to ensure compliance with usage and renovation restrictions imposed by National Register status. The Docent serves ex officio on the Solitude-Fraction Committee.

Required Qualifications

● Master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience in historical preservation and interpretation to equal a Master's degree.
● Detail oriented, with evidence of strong organizational and problem-solving skills
● Strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and presentation skills
● Self-motivated as well as flexible and creative in finding solutions for problems.
● Enjoys working with students and community members.
● Able to work effectively with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, community residents, regional scholars, and prospective students and their families.
● Demonstrated experience in project management and/or program planning
● Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive experience in historical preservation and interpretation.
