Position Function:

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology & Plant Pathology seeks an Assistant Teaching Professor (100% teaching) to be located at the main campus in Starkville, MS. The successful candidate will be an experienced educator who is comfortable teaching core curriculum topics in biochemistry and molecular biology including hands-on laboratory courses covering fundamental techniques. The position comes with an expectation that the successful applicant will be committed to developing courses for distance education and will be engaged with core curriculum development. The expected teaching load for this 9-month position is 3-3 with a substantial student advising commitment. The successful candidate is expected to be an interactive member of the faculty and a leader for curriculum innovation in the department and the field. There will be opportunities for additional teaching employment in the summer.

Department Profile:

The Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology & Plant Pathology is a comprehensive department with academic, research, and service missions. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and currently advises approximately 450 undergraduates and 60 graduate students. The undergraduate program in Biochemistry, which is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), has eleven different concentrations from which students may choose.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
2. Advise undergraduate students in the ASBMB accredited Biochemistry program, and graduate students in the Thrive in Five accelerated program.
3. Participate in service and/or other scholarly activities of the unit, university, and/or profession.
4. Develop new face to face and distance courses, and work collaboratively with the department’s other faculty to enhance curricula.
5. Pursue external funding opportunities in support of improved teaching and training activities as appropriate.
6. Pursue pedagogical research that examines effective instruction in STEM disciplines.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field with:
• Demonstrated experience in the classroom at the college level.
• Potential for effectiveness in online education at the college level.
• A strong desire to work with and supervise undergraduate students.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary department of professionals.
• Evidence of multidisciplinary collaborations, experience integrating basic and applied research, a record of leadership and service, and the ability to secure extramural funding.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two or more years of experience teaching Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related STEM courses.
• Strong evidence of effective teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds.
• A demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.
• The ability to work in a multicultural setting and create an environment that fosters collegiality, diversity, and teamwork while contributing to institutional and departmental missions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The successful candidate must have teaching experience, evidence of multidisciplinary collaborations, experience integrating basic and applied research, a record of leadership and service, and the ability to secure extramural funding.
