Job Summary
The School of Education at Elmhurst University invites applications for an adjunct faculty member to teach an in-person section of EDU 104: Cultural Foundations of Education in Fall 2023. There are opportunities to teach the course in Spring during the day as well.
Course Description
An introduction to cultural and systemic aspects of education in the United States, where we examine ideological, theoretical and conceptual aspects of schooling through legal structures, fiction and non-fiction American literature, as well as philosophical writings. This course places emphasis on understanding education as a part of American society that includes cultural, historical, social, political, legal, racial and socioeconomic structures. Students will interrogate the culture of American education since its inception and ultimately locate their own educational agenda as teachers and United States citizens of American society.
Essential Functions
Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Responsibilities for this adjunct faculty position include course preparation including syllabus development, teaching, grading and being available to students who have questions or require extra help.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Performs other teaching-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Employee is subject to indoor work, protected from weather conditions. Work is sedentary in nature and involves exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently/constantly in order to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Work Hours
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00-2:40 pm, and office hours are required on campus at least one day.

Minimum Qualifications
- Five years of teaching and/or administrative experience
- Licensed teacher and/or administrator (retired or inactive is fine)
- Advanced degree in Education
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work positively with students and other instructors
- Prior experience teaching at the undergraduate level
- Prior experience teaching foundational education courses
