Job Summary:

The UW-Madison Department of Educational Psychology’s Learning Sciences program ( https://edpsych.education.wisc.edu/academics/ ) offers graduate degrees (MS and PhD) for students studying learning sciences and learning analytics, provides undergraduate instruction, and has a leading online master’s program in learning analytics. The Learning Sciences program is one of four program areas in the department, other programs include Human Development, School Psychology, and Quantitative Methods. The Department’s mission is to advance education-related theory and methodology; to improve knowledge about the psychological, technological, and social processes of learning, development, and mental health in diverse populations.

The Department of Educational Psychology has consistently been ranked as one of the top departments of educational psychology and the UW Madison School of Education is ranked as one of the top public schools of education in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report. In addition, Madison, Wisconsin is one of the most livable cities in the United States. The Learning Sciences program also has strong ties with the Wisconsin Center for Education Research. The Department and University provide a stimulating and supportive environment for research, teaching, and programmatic funding with a strong value on collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

The position is a 9-month tenure-track faculty position beginning in August 2024.

We seek strong candidates with a portfolio of research in any area of the learning sciences, including but not limited to:
-Examining and expanding our understanding of models of learning processes
-Developing, applying, testing, refining, and/or expanding current theories or methods in the learning sciences
-Developing, applying, and/or studying learning environments based on current theories in the learning sciences;
-Designing learning environments including Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) environments
-Conducting empirical work using rigorous qualitative and quantitative research methods to build and advance theories in the learning sciences
-Applications of theories and methods from learning sciences to address issues of diversity and/or educational disparities

Ideal candidates will do strong empirical work using qualitative and quantitative research methods although they may predominantly use one or the other in their work, and will be expected to have or to develop significant grant portfolios. Interest in research collaborations with community-based partners (e.g., K-12 schools, non-profit organizations, professional organizations, etc.) is desirable. Candidates will actively participate in the research, teaching, and training programs of the Department of Educational Psychology.

Primary Responsibilities include:
1. Maintain a coherent and productive program of research.
2. Maintain publication activity in high-quality journals.
3. Seek and secure external funding to support research.
4. Supervise graduate student research and provide high quality academic advising and mentoring.
5. Provide professional service at state and national levels and institutional service at program, department, and school levels commensurate with rank.
6. Teach graduate and undergraduate courses with a 2:2 load, with the possibility to buy out of teaching responsibilities with grant funding
7. Contribute to the learning sciences program
8. Extend scholarship to underrepresented groups

Education:

Required
PhD in (or with a specialization in) learning sciences or a related field by the position start date. Equivalent doctoral degree is acceptable.

Qualifications:

The candidate must demonstrate evidence of appropriate teaching, student mentoring, and research productivity supported by external funding or demonstrate the potential for expertise in these areas.
