Description
RESEARCH MECHANICAL ENGINEER - ROBOTICS
The Johns Hopkins University Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (lcsr.jhu.edu) seeks a Research Engineer/Scientist to lead the development of mechanical systems and components for robots.
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated engineer, expected to work independently and in a group environment with faculty and students. The applicant will be expected to work with mechanical and electrical systems and on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced research and development environment.
This individual will utilize Creo/Solidworks to design and reverse engineer complex assemblies and will contribute to conceptualization, proposals, execution, and logistics to facilitate research addressing critical robotics knowledge gaps.
Projects focus on robotics and range from one-off component development to large-scale coordinated efforts. Tasks focus on robot modification, custom fixtures, and data collection devices. Target platforms include medical robots, mobile robots (drones, underwater, self-driving cars), exoskeletons, and industrial robots.
Experience with robotic systems, complex assembly design, rapid prototyping, and mentoring students is preferred.
Assignments include:
· Handle multiple priorities.
· Interface with faculty, students, engineers, designers, and lab personnel.
· Research, design, manufacture, and validate complex assemblies.
· Analyze problems, provide solutions, and provide support.
· Document designs, assembly procedures, and installation protocols.
· Travel to research sites (requirement fluctuates but will generally be <10%).
· Laboratory safety, training, and management.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications :
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Candidates with a lesser degree and significant experience in lieu of master’s degree may be considered.
- Demonstrated understanding of mechatronic system design and fabrication.
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Solid understanding of engineering principles needed to design, fabricate, and validate work.
- Strong background in complex assembly design.
- Experience in material selection and mechanical design principles.
- Demonstrated computer modeling/computer aided design experience.
- Basic knowledge and capability in manufacturing processes, both traditional (lathe, mill, casting, etc.) and modern (laser cutter, 3D printing, etc.).
- Previous experience working on or with robotic systems.
- Preference for strong fabrication background.
- Preferred Creo/Solidworks experience and PDM management.
- Knowledge of engineering best practices.
- Facility with Matlab, Python, or similar computational environment
This is an academic appointment with career progression of Assistant Research Engineer, Associate Research Engineer, Research Engineer, and Principal Research Engineer. Initial appointment will be at a level appropriate given the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
