The Assistant Dean for Career Services is responsible for all phases of operation and management of the Law School’s Office of Career Services consistent with Seton Hall Law's One Student approach to serving the student body. 1) Together with the dean, the Assistant Dean acts as the primary Law School relationship manager with employers throughout the country, particularly in New York, New Jersey, and Washington DC for both JD and MSJ students and graduates. Relationship development and stewardship includes all levels of the state and federal judiciary, state and federal agencies, public service agencies, private law firms, consulting firms, and corporate in-house counsel; 2) Ultimately responsible for life-time relationships with SHUL students and alumni pursuing new career opportunities with an annual goal of 90% employment at graduation; 3) As requested, participate in alumni and admissions events to liaise with prospective employers, retain relationships with alumni seeking employment, and recruit future Seton Hall Law classes; 4) Initiate and coordinate diversity recruiting initiatives in collaborative efforts with other departments and external resources, to increase diversity in the student body and pursue career opportunities for under-represented students and graduates of the Law School; 5) create innovative career-oriented programming to prepare students for success in the launch of their careers; maintain relationships and institutional profile with external professional organizations such as NALP.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Management of an office of 3-4 professionals responsible for serving law and graduate students, as well as alumni in the launch and stewardship of their careers [Student >900) and Alumni (>10,000)] Developing and Maintaining Professional Contacts with Legal Employers in all relevant markets, including New Jersey and New York Metro area, in both the public and private sectors, as well as markets nationally, as student interest and demand requires. This involves both written and personal contacts with the highest level of personnel.
  • Career Counseling-Provide instruction, orientation and counseling to law and graduate students as well as alumni on career related issues. Coach students to develop short and long term job seeking strategies, and oversee career strategic planning and related programming.
  • Document Review/Preparation for Interviews
    Ensure meticulous review and edit of student resumes, cover letters, follow-up materials and other employment related materials for students and alumni. Counsel students one-on-one, helping them to identify their professional strengths, and encouraging them to apply to a variety of legal employers. Train students in proper interview etiquette.
  • Programming
    Contact alumni and other professionals in preparation for programs, workshops, panel discussions and symposia. Implement innovative programs and oversee calendar of events each semester. Keep open dialogue with student organization leaders for ideas on desired programming.
  • DEI
    Consistent with overall Law School ethos, maintain strong emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion in management of office, relationships with students, and identification of employment opportunities. Support students from diverse backgrounds in identifying pathways and employers who will appreciate and advance their potential and aspirations.

Required Qualifications:

  • JD required
  • 5-7 years experience
  • Strong vision for how an office of career services can advance the opportunities of employees, students and graduates from diverse backgrounds.
  • In-depth knowledge of the legal profession and legal market trends, excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and counseling skills are necessary.
  • High level of comfort with portfolio of functions of Symplicity or analogous platform.
