Director, Editorial and Strategic Communications

The American College of Financial Services – the nation’s leading accredited institution focused on delivering applied financial knowledge and education is looking for a Director of Editorial and Strategic Communications to lead a dynamic newsroom and marketing and strategic messaging team within a growing Marketing & Communications department. The Director of Editorial and Strategic Communications is a key leadership role with the responsibility for developing and implementing an editorial and content marketing strategy that educates, excites, engages, and empowers financial and corporate professionals and communities, advances The American College of Financial Services’ reputation as the preeminent provider of applied financial knowledge and education, and positions its faculty, researchers, and industry influencers as best-in-class financial thought leaders. He/she will also be responsible for directing and providing strategic counsel on College-wide content, marketing, and communications strategies, and leading the team that crafts speeches, talking points, and internal and external communications for President and CEO George Nichols III and other members of The College’s Executive Leadership team.
 

The Director of Editorial and Strategic Communications reports directly to the Chief Marketing Officer, manages a team of writers, and works collaboratively with design, video, and digital teams to produce content experiences that promote The College’s strategic goals.

 

Key Responsibilities:

    Develop a comprehensive content strategy that incorporates a broad range of content types, aimed to engage industry and corporate professionals and targeted communities with a clear set of business objectives and a focus on storytelling Lead a nimble, dynamic, message-focused team that maintains a constant finger on the pulse of industry dynamics across investments, retirement, financial planning, wealth management, fintech, diversity and inclusion, education, ethics, and other key areas of interest Foster a mindset constantly looking for an angle to educate and engage the broader financial services industry, as well as students, alumni, the Board of Trustees, the profession’s executive community, and internal and external constituencies Serve as editor-in-chief of The College’s resource center, leading the creation of insights, articles, research reports, white papers, audio interviews, videos, and other dynamic presentations that drive business growth and brand reach Head the development of core marketing content for The College’s professional designation and graduate degree programs, as well as modularized applied financial knowledge courses and programs Lead the team responsible for researching, writing, editing, and consulting on internal and external communications on behalf of The College’s executive leadership. Examples include e-mails and letters from the President and other senior leaders to students, faculty and staff, trustees, alumni, and other audiences; news articles and op-eds; speeches, PowerPoint presentations, talking points, and event and video scripts Create a content strategy and calendar for The President’s blog and Office of The President webpage to position President Nichols as a thought leader and influencer, and drive engagement. Oversee the development and distribution of special messages to College constituents, including Trustee board members and advisory board members Working closely with the President’s Executive Assistant and Chief of Staff, own the process around speaking engagements by consistently demonstrating a solid understanding of speech objectives, audiences and their expectations, event agendas, topics and remarks of other speakers, and the importance of key details such as expected attire, physical setup, and audio/visual support needs
QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills and Knowledge Required:

    In-depth understanding of the financial services profession and proficiency in explaining complex topics in a clear, compelling way Clear competency in MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Google Docs/Sheets, social media platforms (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube), website content management systems, and project management software Proficiency in AP style Outstanding oral and written communication and editing skills Demonstrated multi-tasking and the ability to shift strategies based on clear metrics and collaboration across the department Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with a wide range of individuals, including executive leadership, academics, industry thought leaders, and their staffs Experience leading teams to complete deliverables on time, on budget, and as an extension of multi-year department and organization strategies and goals Experience providing creative and art direction to designers Experience in multi-media brand strategy and execution, producing podcasts and scripting videos is a plus A strong commitment to being part of a culture driving transformational change with a start-up mindset, while honoring The College’s history as the nation’s oldest institution for financial services education
     

Education/Experience Requirements: 

    Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or related major. Graduate degree preferred. 10+ years strategic editorial development in a newsroom or corporate environment Financial services, insurance, asset, investment, or wealth management experience required Team leadership and employee development experience a plus Strategic communications experience a plus Portfolio/writing samples required
