SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Coordinator of Meaningful Work will play a central role in providing our students with a transformational educational experience. The purpose of the Meaningful Work Initiative is to develop, promote, and foster opportunities to connect an authentic working experience on or off campus for students, and to provide support and resources for faculty and staff to enhance experiential learning experiences. The Coordinator will create experiences that lead Schreiner graduates to have the skills, knowledge, habits of mind, and dispositions to be successful in a diverse workforce.

This position will assist the University in conceptualizing, developing, implementing, recruiting, and assessing the Meaningful Work Initiative. Working closely with student employment supervisors, academic program leaders, and employer partners, the Coordinator will provide support for students in the student employment program, off-campus work programs, professional internships within course majors, and the Community Internship Program (CIP).  The Coordinator will also assist with retention efforts by serving as a freshman advisor. This position may teach at least one course each year in a disciplinary field or in the general education program.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Meaningful Work

  • Support and enhance the University’s current meaningful work efforts:  to lead, develop and deliver student internship, career development and student employment services in support of students’ educational, occupational, and personal growth.
  • Oversee the Meaningful Work Certificate requirements; review and approve student certificate submissions.
  • Oversee the Student Employment Program: conduct budget and position audits to determine student employment positions, provide supervisor training using the GROW model of work study, create reports (analysis, assessments, etc.), organize student employment recognition each semester.
  • Coordinate placement of students in federal and university work-study positions including: soliciting requests from supervisors, providing student employment information, paperwork and authorization to students, orientating student to working for success. Work with Human Resources and/or Financial Services as necessary to facilitate hiring, time approval and allocation monitoring for student workers. Conduct site visits for off-campus placement.
  • Collaborate with individual academic departments to establish a common rubric for evaluation of off-campus work experience (i.e., internships).
  • Serve as a liaison for off-campus work experience by building partnerships and experiential opportunities locally, state-wide, nationally, and internationally for students.
  • Collaborate with other departments throughout campus to effectively market experiential learning through outreach programming. Promote the accessibility of experiential learning postings as well as experiential learning job search strategies.  Conduct outreach to current/prospective students and family members to promote benefits of experiential learning.
  • Conduct site visits to include campus, local, and regional employers to maintain relations as well as further expand experiential learning opportunities, promoting out-of-the-classroom experience and learning activity related to students’ academic studies and career direction.  In coordination with supervisor, participate in area business, not-for-profit associations, and chamber of commerce activities with emphasis on relation development.
  • Participate in staff activities/meetings and professional development activities including involvement in state, regional and national associations.
  • Coordinate various events and activities related to experiential opportunities (i.e., Spring All Majors Career Fair, Fall Internship Dinner).
  • Oversee budgeting processes.
  • Stay abreast of national best practices, assist in identifying and informing staff/faculty/administration on national, regional, and local educational issues and ensure compliance with federal regulations and applicable labor laws relative to student employment and experiential learning.
  • Serve on campus committees and groups as requested.
  • Provide support to the Center for Advising and Career Development as needed.

 

FRESHMAN ADVISOR & TEACHING

  • Assist students in matters ranging from adapting to the university environment to giving guidance about academic programs and offering career planning.
  • Be familiar with the undergraduate curriculum, as well as university rules and regulations.
  • Monitor student performance and participate in retention interventions as coordinated from the Retention Office.
  • Communicate course expectations, maintains knowledge in course content, communicates effectively, motivates students, responds to student needs, accepts responsibility for student outcomes, performs self-evaluation, and allows for student evaluation.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required. Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or closely related field is preferred.
  • Experience developing, promoting, and managing experiential learning for students in a college environment.
  • Proven success in undergraduate education and excellence in teaching.
  • Proven success in developing partnerships.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Willing and able to take initiative.
  • Ability to facilitate multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Knowledge in use of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license, related insurance, and good driving record.
