Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Director of Internal Audit plans and directs the overall operation of the Office of Internal Audit and provides leadership for staff members. The director of internal audit assists management and the board of regents with identifying, avoiding, and mitigating risks.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Master's degree preferred.

Experience: Seven years of experience auditing, accounting, or related field of work. Higher education experience preferred
Must be Bondable. Current Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).

Licensure & Certifications: Knowledge of internal auditing standards and practices. Knowledge of higher education and/or accounting policies, standards, and procedures.
Excellent oral and written communication skills

Job Duties:
  • 20% - Develops an annual audit plan using a risk-based methodology in consultation with senior staff and discusses plan with the Audit Committee. Oversees the execution of the annual audit plan. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Directs the activities of the internal audit staff; manages the performance of audit assignments by staff, reviews documents and audit reports, edits the reports prepared by other auditors. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Performs audit work including audits to ensure the audit plan is completed and conducts consulting projects and advisory services at the request of management. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Reports significant issues supported by documentation, partner with clients to develop recommendations to improve controls and systems. - (Essential)
  • 8% - Monitors the whistleblower hotline in coordination with University Counsel and manages any investigations of fiscal misconduct and related policy violations. Discuss the investigation results with University Counsel - (Essential)
  • 5% - Periodically meets with the Audit Committee to discuss issued audit reports and updates on the audit plan and other audit activities. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Coordinates with the Board of Regents, administrators, faculty, and staff, and with external audit and law enforcement agencies, as needed; may be required to testify in court; may also be required to interact with university students and alumni, and with vendors doing business with the university. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, objectives, and short- and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in the accomplishment of established goals. - (Essential)
  • 3% - Develops annual operating budgets and provides fiscal direction to the unit. - (Marginal)
  • 2% - Performs other duties as assigned to increase the effectiveness of the office. - (Marginal)
