This is a full-time appointment. The hourly wage is $18.00 per hour with a competitive retirement and benefits package, including insurance, vacation, holidays, and paid time off.

Effective October 23, 2022, University Housing increased the night differential to $2.50/hour for all hours worked between 6:00pm and 6:00am.

Effective January 1, 2023, University Housing has added a weekend day premium of $1.70/hour.
The existing campus weekend differential continues to pay $0.80/hour from 12:00am on
Saturday through 11:59pm on Sunday. University Housing is adding an additional $1.70/hour
premium for hours worked between 6:00am-6:00pm Saturday and Sunday.

Current UW-Madison employees may be eligible to be hired up to their current rate of compensation based on qualifications.

Job Summary:

University Housing is looking for energetic and committed individuals with excellent customer service skills to join our custodial team!

We are an organization with high quality standards, and Custodian Leads keep University Housing spaces safe and clean for residents, staff, and guests on the UW-Madison campus. They also assist in coordination of tasks, provide leadership, and assist with training new staff members.

Work is performed under the support and guidance of a Building Services Supervisor or Assistant Building Services Supervisor, or Custodial Services Program Manager.

Responsibilities: Cleans institutional facilities, removes waste and recycling, and monitors building security to ensure cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in assigned areas. Leads the custodial work of others and responds to custodial emergencies.
  • 50% Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
  • 5% Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances and reports issues to appropriate entities
  • 5% Maintains organization of supply areas and equipment, documents inventory, and requests additional supplies as needed
  • 5% Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs
  • 5% Maintains clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
  • 10% Schedules, monitors, and communicates with staff and assists with basic training
  • 5% Responds to facility emergency and hazardous situations, and escalates incidents according to established policies and procedures
  • 10% Prepares, services, and/or maintains residence hall and dining facilities for residents and guests
  • 5% Assists residents and guests with event set up and take down
Tasks:
  • Completes work in occupied or vacant residence hall and dining spaces
  • Demonstrates and role models exceptional customer service
  • Monitors and communicates the performance of systems and staff within facilities
  • Creates, promotes, and participates in a collaborative team environment
  • Maintains and implements prescribed cleaning standards
  • Assists with resident move in and out operations
  • Communicates with residents and guests to address needs and service requests
  • Communicates in English via radio, written instruction, and in person with staff and supervisors
  • Provides support and assists as needed in the implementation of plans and procedures in the event of an emergency

Education:

Qualifications:

Required
- English Proficiency - This position requires one or more of the following abilities: ability to speak, read, write, and/or understand verbal instructions in English
-1 year of previous employment.

Preferred
- Previous cleaning, custodial, hospitality, or related experience within an academic, commercial or residential environment.
- Previous experience in a leadership role assisting with group planning or managing workloads.

License/Certification:

Preferred
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Work Schedule:

Multiple vacancies may be available

Primary work schedule:
1st shift position - 40 hours per week between the hours of 7:30am-4pm. Daily schedule may include weekdays or a combination of weekdays and weekend days.

Primary work schedule will be determined upon hire. Schedule alterations as operations and position expectations demand.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
