Job Description

NAU Career Development empowers students and alumni to confidently navigate their careers as citizens of an evolving and global world. NAU Career Development, part of Student Affairs, is physically located in the University Union. We are a dynamic & positive culture team focused on preparing students for the 21st Century workforce and workplace, through career advising and education, connecting students to job and internship providers, and promoting consistent, compliant, and meaningful student employment and internship experiences. We are also responsible for collaborating with other NAU career development offices, a variety of student affairs programs, faculty, and other university departments to ensure that students receive a clear, consistent message regarding career development.

The Career Development Coordinator will work as part of a collaborative team to provide career education and advise NAU students of all academic years and majors through individual appointments, group workshops, and self-paced resources. Our priority is to work with stakeholders across the university to integrate career content into students' curricular and co-curricular experiences. The Career Development Coordinator will be part of a Student Success Team and work collaboratively with Student Development Coordinators, Enrollment Specialists, and Academic Advisors to coordinate and implement a variety of campus wide programs and interventions to enhance student retention and graduation.

Career Advising and Education - 60%
  • Advises individual students on resume/cover letter development, interview skills, and job search strategies, for student employment, internships, and full-time employment.
  • Provides expertise to students on a variety of career exploration tools and related resources, such as O*Net, MBTI, CliftonStrengths, or others.
  • Serves as a specialist with online career employment service systems such as Handshake, Suitable, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Articulates the NAU-wide career development philosophy designed to meet the needs of NAU's student population and effectively prepares them for the realities of the 21st century workforce; develops or oversees the development of programs grounded in this philosophy.
  • Conducts workshops of varying sizes (up to 100 students) on a variety of topics including resumes/cover letters, interview skills, job search strategies, networking/relationship building, and transferable skills.
  • Customizes and delivers college/program-specific programming or other specialized initiatives.
  • Develops communications, working with NAU entities to promote Career Development.
  • Creates and maintains online and print career resources for students.
  • Assists in the planning/implementation of career and job fairs.

University Partnerships - 30%
  • Serves as the liaison to one or more Academic Colleges, Student Affairs programs, and other NAU programs (e.g., Veterans and Transfer, First Generation, Center for International Education, etc.) building deep functional knowledge of the career development needs of that college's and program's student population.
  • For all liaison roles, identifies student career development needs, determines the best career development solutions to meet those needs, and partners to provide services to the assigned student population.
  • Collects and analyzes data (qualitative and quantitative) to assess the effectiveness and impact of Career Development programming.
  • Serves on department, division, and university committees such as the Exploratory Working Group, Hiring Committees, etc.
  • Independently develops relationships with departments across divisions and colleges connecting to programming and curriculum with the desired outcome of positive student development in career concepts and procedures.
  • Achieves goals, objectives, and mission needs established by Enrollment and Student Services, Career Development, and Student Affairs; reports on progress and recommends changes to program based on assessment results.

Other - 10%
  • Maintains current knowledge of career development, employment and recruiting trends, college student development, and other related topics as appropriate.
  • Represents NAU Career Development on campus, in the local community, regionally, and beyond at committees, conferences, networking events, and other professional development events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment
  • Occasional travel within Maricopa County.
  • Occasional travel outside of Maricopa County.
  • Occasional outdoor/onsite/offsite/virtual recruitment activity and career event participation required.
  • Will need to occasionally work outside of standard business operating hours include evenings and weekends.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor's degree.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in teaching, counseling, or advising high school students, college students, or young professionals on career, academic, or personal development topics.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Students Affairs, Business, Organizational Leadership, Human Resources, Education, or another related field.
  • 2+ years of experience working in a university setting or industry recruiting.
  • 2+ years of experience teaching or facilitating workshops in a higher education, non-profit, or corporate environment.
  • 1+ years program development and implementation in a higher education, non-profit, or corporate environment.
  • Experience developing and nurturing stakeholder relationships across a large, diverse organization.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $41,421. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
