St. Edward's University of Austin, Texas invites applications for the position of Director. St. Edward's University is an independent Catholic university, which has increasingly gained national recognition for its high-quality academic programs, characterized by its Holy Cross mission of education for social justice. The Kozmetsky Center of Excellence at St. Edward's University was established by a generous gift from Ronya and George Kozmetsky, visionaries who supported education and the betterment of communities.

The University seeks the next Director of the Kozmetsky Center of Excellence, who will provide dynamic and innovative leadership in the study and analysis of civic engagement, public policy, and applied political science. The Director will support and contribute to the university's strategic plan in the areas of (1) diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, (2) Austin connections, (3) experiential learning, and (4) campus vibrancy. The Director will generate resources for students and faculty, and, in turn, will offer resources to the public and private sectors. To this end, the Director will build cooperative relations with prominent figures in public service, non-profit organizations, and foundations to multiply the resources available at St. Edward's and within the local community.

For consideration, The Director will be both a scholar and practitioner who is familiar with the work of experts on civic engagement, public policy, and applied political science and is able to involve them in the Center's activities and programs. Candidates will collaborate with faculty and university administrators on programs and engage students to inspire and support their interests.

The Directorship is an 11-month, full-time position. The Director will hold a faculty appointment with a baseline teaching load of two courses each semester in their area of expertise.

Required Qualifications include a PhD in political science or related field. The applicant is expected to have teaching experience with a sustained record of excellent undergraduate teaching. Additionally, the next Director should have at least five years working in the field of applied political science and lastly strong interpersonal and relationship building skills to make connections with external campus partners, engage students and faculty, and lead an endowed center.

The preferred candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of Austin, Texas, and public service processes and systems at municipal, county, and state levels. The preferred candidate will have a sustained record of excellent undergraduate teaching experience involving experiential learning and leading co-curricular student activities.

Essential Responsibilities Include:
  • Deliver a distinguished speaker series on topics consistent with the strategic plan
  • Support student organization activities around civic engagement
  • Directly provide engaging and innovation student learning experiences around skill-building and leveraging social media
  • Provide experiential opportunities within the Center via research analysis and advocacy
  • Match students with external internships in the area of civic engagement, public policy, and applied political science.
  • Establish external sources of revenue via continuing education trainings and undergraduate research experiences
  • Work independently and collaboratively with university and community partners in a fast-paced environment.
  • Complete an annual report of Center activities
