Assistant Professor Without Tenure, Medical Physics, Radiation Oncology, FHCC Peninsula

The Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Washington (UW), School of Medicine, invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (without tenure by reason of funding) position in Medical Physics who will join the community-based Fred Hutch Cancer Center (FHCC) Peninsula clinic in Poulsbo, Washington; a successful established community cancer center with 3.5 radiation oncologists as well as medical oncology services serving patients on the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas. This practice treats approximately 30 patients per day on one linear accelerator as well as a brachytherapy service for prostate implants as well as gynecological cancers. Department Overview

UW Medicine and its partner institutions (UWMC, Fred Hutch Cancer Center including its Proton Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, VA Puget Sound, Harborview Hospital) provide an extensive and outstanding array of radiation oncology modalities for cancer patients. The Department of Radiation Oncology treats over 2,800 patients annually from a multi-state region covering over 25% of the U.S. geographic area. The University of Washington has the only Radiation Oncology department in North America that has clinical particle beam delivery systems for both proton and neutron therapy. Our clinical approach is collaborative with numerous multidisciplinary clinics, tumor boards and disease specific chart rounds. We are a part of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and have strong translational and clinical research collaborations. The Department has 30 physicians, 10 advanced practice providers, 30 physicists, and 3 research faculty. Educational opportunities in our residency programs, fellowship programs and post-doctoral fellowships abound. This position will demonstrate a strong interest in and commitment to research and education, and engage in collaboration with multidisciplinary clinical teams.

Physics Overview
Physicists oversee technical implementation of patient care and play a key role in the Department's patient safety and quality control program. Our faculty has a diverse range of expertise and research interests in functional imaging, radiation biology, biomedical informatics, physics consults for patients, FLASH proton therapy, optimization, global oncology, and scholarship in education, including international research and education collaborations. Research facilities include a proton research beamline, SARRP small animal irradiator, and an active radiation biology lab. The physics group values team players, effective communicators, a service orientation, and a willingness to lead clinical projects of departmental need. Members of the physics group are active in national committees, outreach, and other volunteer contributions to the medical physics community through professional organizations such as the AAPM, SDAMPP, RSNA and ASTRO, on editorial and review boards, and examination committees. 

The Kitsap Community

The city of Poulsbo is located in the northern part of Kitsap County and is in proximity to the Pacific coast with ample year-round recreational activities including skiing, boating, walking, hiking, and biking in close vicinity. Natural beauty lies within close reach on the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsula with expansive parks, forests, lakes and mountains. Poulsbo is in close proximity of Bainbridge Island, home to one of the best school districts in the State of Washington and is an easy ferry commute to the city of Seattle that offers ample opportunity to attend professional sports venues, a myriad of museums and restaurants, music and other cultural events.

The base salary range for this position will be: $14,584 - $17,500 per month ($175,008 - $210,000 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Appointment Description

The selected candidate will be proposed for appointment to the full-time faculty at the University of Washington as an Assistant Professor (without tenure by reason of funding) on the regular faculty track (either Clinician-Scientist or Clinician-Educator) with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024 or earlier. Assistant professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

NOTE: This position may require work to be performed on-site at a Fred Hutch Cancer Center (FHCC) facility. FHCC requires all individuals, including University of Washington faculty clinicians, working at a FHCC facility to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Unlike UW’s vaccination policy which is appended below, the FHCC policy does not provide for religious or medical exemptions. As such, a UW offer associated with this recruitment is contingent upon, among other things, the preferred candidate demonstrating that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by no later than the commencement of their appointment.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in medical physics or a related field.  Candidates should have completed a structured clinical residency training program in medical physics, therapy physics or foreign equivalent.
