Overview
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean is a member of the academic affairs group in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty. The Assistant Dean will have primary responsibility for monitoring the performance of academic units against the teaching budget of the University, and leading summer meetings with department chairs and academic managers to set the academic year teaching budget. They will review academic appointments and re-appointments prior to approval. The Assistant Dean will collaborate with the Associate Dean in managing the promotion processes for the ODOF ranks of faculty and academic professionals. This individual will also monitor the University's assistants-in-instruction budget, working with administrative and academic offices to see that resources are employed effectively and efficiently.
Responsibilities
The assistant dean will
- advise faculty chairs and academic managers on hiring policy and procedure for ODOF appointments.
- discuss teaching plans with academic unit department chairs, program directors, and academic managers in order to set the teaching budget.
- collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Finance to provide teaching budget forecasts to Dean, Deputy Dean, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in order to assist with faculty hiring planning.
- approve appointments and reappointments of faculty, academic professionals, and visitors in multiple academic divisions, as well as manage the search processes that precede these appointments.
- work with departments to ensure the accuracy and completeness of lecturer, academic professional, and visitor offer letters and appointment materials.
- collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to manage the promotion and appointment committees for academic professionals (researchers, specialists, and librarians).
- allocate and manage the University’s graduate student Assistant-In-Instruction (AI) budget.
- collaborate with the Dean, Deputy Dean, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to determine areas for process improvement, implement policy changes, and plan for future initiatives.
Qualifications
- Master’s or professional degree required.
- 7+ years of professional experience required.
- The successful candidate will have a proven record of managing complex issues, communicating with diverse constituencies, meeting deadlines and prioritizing competing demands
- Analytical acumen and ability to interpret complex data for planning and reporting purposes.
- Familiarity with budget management and business operations.
- Discretion and tact in handling confidential information.
- Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, Outlook).
- Preferred: Working knowledge of PeopleSoft, Labor Accounting, Oracle Hyperion Financial Management, Prime Financials, and Tableau
