Overview

The Princeton Center for Complex Materials (PCCM), an NSF-funded Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), administered by the Princeton Materials Institute (PMI) seeks an Education Outreach Liaison (insert specialist/officer/manager). The selected applicant will direct, guide, and facilitate PCCM faculty involvement in education outreach to meet the requirements of PCCM. This position develops and manages partnerships with other departments and programs, enhances and conducts existing education outreach efforts related to higher education (e.g. REU program, Summer School, etc.). The successful candidate will be experienced in enhancing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts. This position directs the development of education content and supervises all outreach short-term professionals, volunteers, student employees and others.

A teaching certification and/or degree in a materials science related area (Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, …) is required.


The ability to communicate clearly and directly is essential as this position requires strong verbal and written communication skills, project management and independent decision-making skills; familiarity with non-profit organizations and educational efforts in urban environments. We seek a team player with the ability to also work independently and accurately in a fast-paced University research environment. The successful candidate should possess computer knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications, desktop publishing and video applications (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere), with working knowledge of web design software (e.g. Drupal), social media platforms, and virtual meeting/webinar applications.


The position must manage the balance among: the expectations of PCCM grant requirements, University policy, and legal requirements; the demands and availability of University researchers, scientists, undergraduates and graduate students; the organizational structures of informal and formal science education; the needs and concerns of various community organizations. The intersection of the above requires the ability to negotiate effectively among very diverse groups with differing objectives.

The day-to-day function of this position is to direct PCCM efforts in the area of science education outreach. Specifics detailed below.



Responsibilities

-Develop educational content. including identifying appropriate program type such as online workshops, exhibits, presentations, for use by and in conjunction with identified and developed partners. Determine appropriate content, size, resources, logistics and other relevant criteria for such programming. Coordinate efforts with appropriate University offices. Perform ongoing program evaluations during the semester to measure success.
This will involve cross-functional work with SEAS Communications team to develop publications, talks, promotional events, social media posts, publicity emails and listservs, and video recordings.

-Direct, guide and encourage PMI/PCCM faculty, postdocs, and grad students involvement in education outreach to develop content and connect materials research at PCCM with the education needs of other higher education programs, enhance and create new programs as needed. The successful candidate will initiate and drive this effort with strong input and collaboration with the PCCM director and other campus outreach professionals.

-Determine what partnerships to cultivate and develop with input from other departments and programs at Princeton and at other higher education institutions, with special emphasis on Diversity Equity and Inclusion.

-This will involve cross-functional work with SEAS Communications team to develop press releases, newspaper and newsletter articles, promotional events, social media posts, publicity emails and listservs, and video recordings.

-Take and edit event photos, coordinate video/webinar recordings, gather media releases, write event summaries/publicity for posting on the PCCM website and social media. Media detail includes Alt Text for photos and closed captioning for video recordings to meet Princetons accessibility requirements. Editing videos and posting to the PCCM YouTube channel.

-Researching national diversity and education statistics (NSFs National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES)) to compare national statistics to PCCMs diversity and education statistics and summarize the comparisons for annual reporting metrics.

-Assist in tracking, gathering, and reporting PCCM data regarding its diversity, education and outreach for annual reporting purposes. Assist in writing descriptive narrative to accompany and highlight the Centers outreach and diversity efforts.

-Prepare PowerPoint slide presentations for the NSF, internal and external partners, visits and presentations. The candidate may participate in the verbal presentations.

-The candidate will be required to occasionally work on a weekend day(s).



Qualifications

Essential

-Teaching Certification and/or Degree in Science, Engineering or equivalent degree
-Proven interpersonal and communication skills with experienced handling of confidential materials.
-Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
-Excellent and demonstrated skills in attention to detail.
-Strong inter-personal skills that are reflected in a professional manner and the ability to work collaboratively
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
