CMU recently launched the Responsible AI Initiative to consolidate our research efforts and resources in this area and strengthen CMU’s visibility in AI policy circles. We are looking for a Program Manager to help lead management and operations for the initiative, help coordinate new and ongoing projects, and provide support to ResAI leaders for the continued growth of the initiative. The program manager will be a member of the staff of the Block Center for Technology and Society which hosts the initiative. The program manager will report to the executive director of the Block Center and to the faculty leadership team of the Responsible AI initiative.

Goals of the Position:
  • Facilitate the Responsible AI initiative’s overall operations and workflow;

  • Grow initiatives and activities through independent management of particular lines of work;

  • Improve engagement with RAI affiliated faculty and students from across the university;

  • Increase connectivity and real-world outcomes of RAI research, events, and other convenings.

Your core responsibilities will include:
  • Under the direction of the Block Center executive director and in coordination with the RAI faculty leadership team, work to strategically manage day-to-day activities and establish strong processes and procedures to track and advance RAI priorities;

  • Lead, in coordination with the RAI faculty leadership team and other supporting staff, a quarterly Policy Salon, convening RAI faculty to engage on relevant AI policy issues;

  • Lead the drafting process and handle the coordination, publication, and dissemination of public- and policy-facing materials derived from RAI Policy Salons, research, and other activities in consultation with the Block Center executive director and the RAI faculty leadership;

  • Run the RAI research seed fund by drafting and disseminating calls for proposals, working with to fund and support RAI research, and work with project teams to derive policy-relevant insights for memo publications;

  • In coordination with Block Center staff, improve RAI student engagement by coordinating RAI student activities;

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with policy customers and liaise with partner entities which may include other campus centers and institutes, Block Center staff, RAI student support, relevant external organizations.

  • The program manager’s effort will be primarily dedicated to Responsible AI activities. However, depending on the workload, if not at capacity, the program manager may be asked to contribute to other Block center activities under the direction of the center’s Executive Director and in consultation with the RAI leadership team.

An ideal candidate is:
  • Entrepreneurial while also being well organized;

  • Able to work independently without significant oversight while remaining focused on mission priorities;

  • Able to understand RAI initiative objectives and provide value to faculty;

  • Focused professional who values translating RAI research into real-world application;

  • Willing to “roll up their sleeves” to do organizational and logistical tasks as needed, with the same level of quality as larger project management tasks;

  • Committed to the belief that AI must be developed and deployed responsibly in all domains.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree

  • A successful candidate will possess a combination of work and educational experience that demonstrates an ability to meet the expectations and quickly acquire skills that are needed.
