Description

The Hampton University Department of Undergraduate Nursing Education invites nominations and applications for Retention/NCLEX Success Coach at the rank of Assistant Professor with a projected start date August 23, 2021.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The Department of Undergraduate Nursing Education has a 129 years of educating future nurses.

The Retention/NCLEX Success Coach at Hampton University School of Nursing reports directly to the Dean and coordinates activities with the Chairperson of the Department of Undergraduate Nursing Education (Nursing and Health Sciences). The Retention/NCLEX Success Coach is tasked with assisting students in successful matriculation through coaching, mentoring and tutoring. The Retention/NCLEX Success Coach provides supplemental instruction in a group or individual setting for students enrolled in undergraduate courses. Referrals can be self-initiated and/or by faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Uses a variety of teaching methods in both face-to-face and e-learning environments
  • Collaborate effectively with HUSON faculty and Dean to align supplemental instruction activities with undergraduate curricula
  • Provide on-on-one guidance or group sessions to improve student outcomes
  • Serves as a mentor to senior nursing and health sciences students
  • Collaborates with clinical lab coordinator to incorporate high fidelity simulation activities
  • Provide supplemental instruction to students
  • Develop and implement activities to promote undergraduate student success
  • Develop learning contract for at-risk students and enforcement of those contracts;
  • Maintain detailed records on all student participants addressing demographic data, academic performance, NCLEX passage and workforce placement
  • Present student workshops (e.g. test-taking, study skills, time-management, stress and anxiety reduction etc.)
  • Present faculty workshops (e.g. NGN NCLEX, test item writing, test-item analysis)
  • Assist with dosage calculations exam preparation and remediation
  • Teach tutorial course content and update periodically based on attrition data
  • Build a library of resources shared with students and faculty
  • Perform other such duties as may be deemed appropriate.
  • Provide referrals to the Counseling Center and the Student Success Center.
  • Maintain open communication with course faculty regarding student progress


Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctoral degree (PhD, EdD or DNP)
  • RN license in Virginia or compact license
  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience as a registered nurse
  • Minimum of five years of teaching in an institution of higher learning or equivalent experience
  • Current knowledge of nursing practice at the registered nurse level
  • Commitment to teaching, scholarship, and service that is consistent with the priorities of the School and the mission of the University
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work environment in the School, College, and University
  • Technological literacy and a commitment to integrate technology into work product
  • Commitment to professional service within the University and beyond
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Familiarity with Testing Packages such as HESI, ATI, Kaplan, etc.
