The Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute (HUSCRI) invites applications for a Research Associate to begin immediately.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. Research at HUSCRI is focused on defining the mechanisms underlying dermatological disorders, particularly those affecting individuals with skin of color. Our mission is to conduct research, disseminate knowledge, and to improve the understanding and treatment of skin disorders.

Duties and Responsibilities

We are looking for an independent, motivated scientist with a strong work ethic as well as an ability to work with members of a team. Good communication and time management skills are expected. The successful candidate is an experienced and dedicated researcher who has demonstrated an ability to work independently on research projects and have contributed to published reports. Additional tasks include developing new techniques, establishing novel assays, problem-solving technical issues and optimizing experimental conditions. In addition, the successful candidate is also expected to adjust work hours to accommodate grant applications, manuscript submissions and other project needs. Experience in manuscript preparation, grant submissions, lab organization are expected. This individual will assume an instructive position, to teach/train new lab members and undergraduate students as part of this position.

Researchers with several years of experience are encouraged to apply. Specific duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Perform and analyze molecular and cellular biology experiments using current assays.

2. Maintaining proper lab records for all experiments, for manuscripts and publications.

3. Responsible for lab reagents, equipment repairs, safety and power outage issues.

4. Regular meeting with the PI to discuss results and plans.

5. Presenting data in lab meetings and at conferences.

Qualifications

A degree in molecular biology, cellular or developmental biology with at least 3 years of laboratory research experience and contributions to publications. Substantial molecular and cellular expertise are expected, including expert knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, and immunofluorescent techniques. Applicants are expected to be able to work independently on specific projects and tasks, including the ability to conduct literature searches and utilize problem-solving skills to expedite research results. Additional lab experience with the use of an animal model such as (mouse or zebrafish) specific techniques, genetics and/or microsurgical procedures, would be an advantage. Compensation commensurate with experience.
