Description
The Hampton University Cancer Research Center is accepting nominations and applications for the position of Research Associate. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong background in next generation sequencing and genomic data analysis. The laboratory focuses on cancer genomics and genetic epidemiology, the investigation of the molecular basis of germ-line susceptibility alleles, discovery of somatic mutations in tumors, and gene expression analysis.
Founded in 1868, Hampton University is located on 314 acreas of the Virginia Peninsula. It is privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher education and all programs are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the American Council on Education.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position will use cutting-edge techniques, including next generation sequencing, robotic-based high-throughput experiments, and CRISPR-Cas9 genetic editing technologies. Currently, the laboratory uses a combination of computational and experimental approaches – using DNA and RNA from cancer cases and controls, human tumor cells grown in cell culture, and primary tumor samples– to understand the genetics of cancer. Related projects in the laboratory include: 1) Next generation sequencing of human samples and 2) Functionalization of genetic variants of unknown significance. An ideal candidate will be highly motivated, have previous experience working in a lab environment, and have experience in the following tasks:
A masters’ or doctoral degree in molecular biology, biotechnology or a related field is required. A strong background in genomics and experience in analysis of large datasets is highly desirable. Experience in manuscript development and grantsmanship is also highly desirable.
How to Apply
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the posiiton is filled. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter highlighting key qualifications and interests, a current curriculum vitae, Faculty Application for Employment and 3 letters of reference to:
