The Hampton University Partnership for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) is seeking a candidate for a Research Assistant Professor position. The appointment is expected to be on or before July 1, 2023.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University (www.hamptonu.edu) is located onapproximately 300acres of the Virginia Peninsula. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredit all programs. Hampton University, a member of the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) community of higher education institutions, is currently enjoying tremendous growth and development from a traditionally teaching to a more research-intensive institution. Hampton University is currently a Masters-level institution of higher learning with a primarily undergraduate student population of approximately 4,600 students pursuing degrees in diverse areas of study.

The Hampton-Brandeis PREM is a partnership between Hampton University and Brandeis University that includes the strengthening and expansion of collaborative research and education between the two institutions. The overall goal of the Hampton-Brandeis PREM program is to increase recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of talented minority students in materials science and engineering related fields. In addition, an important ancillary goal is to increase the research capacity and productivity at Hampton. The Hampton-Brandeis PREM's partnership is based on several components including research in opto-active materials .

The Hampton-Brandeis PREM Research Assistant Professor appointee will participate in a Post-Doctoral Training Program which is called the Path-to-Professorship (PTP) Program. The PTP program is comprised of two complementary components: (1) the PREM Mentorship and Networking Program, and (2) a PREM Seed Project Funding for PTP Research Assistant Professor. The PTP Program primary aim is to expanding the diversity of the NSF-funded materials science research workforce and the HBCU materials science-related faculty pool.

Duties and Responsibilities

The PTP Program Research Assistant Professor appointment will be in the School of Engineering and Technology. He/she will be supervised jointly by the PREM Director and the PREM thrust leaders. The successful candidate will be responsible for the performance of PREM research projects under the direct supervision of Hampton University teaching faculty. The PTP Research Assistant Professor will supervise a research project team consisting of students (graduate, undergraduates and high school) and collaborators, engage in scholarly activities, and actively work towards the further growth and development of the Hampton University PREM.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have an earned doctorate (chemistry, engineering, physics, or related field) and a strong record of research demonstrated in research productivity during graduate and post-doctoral training. Scholarly activity appropriate for an appointment as a Research Assistant Professor in theSchool of Engineering and Technologyis required.

The successful candidate will possess the following skills and abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities-research, education and outreach;
  • Expertise in chemical synthesis, polymer systems, surface chemistry, biopolymers, and/or sensors
  • Demonstrated ability to work on interdisciplinary, inter-institutional research teams and;
  • Strong track record in research productivity.
  • Strong communication skills
