The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications is accepting nominations and applications for the full-time position of Assistant Professor of Research. The anticipated start date for this position is August 23, 2021.
Founded in 1868, Hampton University is located on 314 acres of the Virginia Peninsula. It is privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher education, and all programs are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the American Council on Education.
The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications is the result of more than 50 years of mass media-related instruction at Hampton University. The program services nearly 400 undergraduate pre-majors in journalism and strategic communication. The curriculum encompasses the professional values and essential competencies enumerated by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Professor of Research is a full-time faculty member in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications. The successful candidate should have a clear research agenda within the area of communication. This faculty member will promote the importance of research among the school’s faculty. The Scripps Howard School especially desires candidates who can perform media-based research that can illuminate industry trends and/or show industry needs. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
The ideal candidate must possess a Ph.D. in the area of communication. The successful candidate should have a successful track record of presenting and/or publishing research in academic and non-academic, or professional, venues. Ideally, the candidate will have professional experience in a communication-related field (public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, etc.).

- Teaching the school’s undergraduate Media Research class.
- Teaching a 2/2 load, with a two-course release provided for the
faculty member to complete and disseminate research.
- Representing the school as research lead, coordinating efforts
in developing and advancing research.
- Participating in research information forums and projects under
the direction of the university’s Vice President for
Research.
- Participating in the development and assessment of student
learning.
- Advising students.
The ideal candidate must possess a Ph.D. in the area of communication. The successful candidate should have a successful track record of presenting and/or publishing research in academic and non-academic, or professional, venues. - Experience in research, external fundraising and grant
writing.
- Outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication
skills.
- A high level of energy and initiative.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Willingness to support a diverse population of learners.
- Ability to work in a participatory and collegial setting,
managing multiple projects effectively.
