Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison-Wisconsin Union- Accounting Team is seeking an Accountant I to fill a fixed term position (Term is planned for 18 months with possible extension to 24 months). We offer a fun, dynamic, and collaborative environment with opportunities for hybrid remote and onsite work at Memorial Union, with flexible hours Monday-Friday.

This position works within a team to perform a variety of accounting tasks for the Wisconsin Union, including preparation and entry of journal entries, reconciliation of accounts, and assistance with preparation of financial reports and budgets and the integration of additional units into the Wisconsin Union. We are a growing, diverse $50+ million annual operation comprised of more than 100 responsibility centers and over 5700 revenue and expense accounts.

Responsibilities: Performs general accounting duties following generally accepted accounting principles and procedures. Prepares financial reports and assists with budgeting. Ensures the accurate recording and reporting of the business unit's financial transactions.
  • 35% Organizes, prepares, and updates basic financial statements, monthly and year-end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions
  • 15% Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, recommends, and implements basic solutions as needed
  • 20% Assists with accounting and reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports
  • 10% Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures
  • 10% Assists in preparing budgets and financial projections
  • 10% Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments

Education:

Preferred

Qualifications:

-Minimum of two years accounting work required
-Experience with Excel required and advanced Excel preferred
-Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) software preferred
-Experience with UW-Madison systems/policies preferred
-Experience with preparation of accrual financial statements preferred
-Experience with Outlook, Teams, and Word preferred

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 23 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

Additional Information:

The Wisconsin Union operates from several buildings on the UW-Madison campus including Memorial Union, Union South, Fluno Center, Pyle Center, University Club, Red Gym, and the Student Activity Center. The Wisconsin Union is a financially self-supporting division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Financial support for the organization is provided by income earned by over thirty food service units and a variety of nonfood units such as games, guest rooms, space rentals and campus vending. Substantial support is also provided by student fees. The total annual organizational budget is approximately $60 million dollars.

Student Affairs is led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Our staff is dedicated to serving students and to helping them succeed in and out of the classroom in areas including health and well-being, identity and inclusion, leadership and engagement, and student advocacy.
