Special Information

Northern Arizona University's Department of Educational Leadership invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Teaching Professor position to begin in August 2023.

The Educational Leadership (EDL) department prepares PreK-20 leaders for Arizona and beyond with the theoretical and empirical grounding to be exemplary leaders in PreK-20 institutions. The EDL department is located within the College of Education and is aligned with the strategic priorities of NAU to elevate excellence for a bold and boundless future. We are committed to serving the people of Arizona, including Indigenous and Latine communities; and are dedicated to preparing individuals who contribute to the academic preparedness, positive educational outcomes, school climate, and college-going and completion rates in Arizona and beyond. Programs offered include an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with specializations in PreK-12 Leadership and Community College and Higher Education (CCHE) Leadership; Master's degrees in Educational Foundations, Community College and Higher Education Leadership, PreK-12 Leadership with Principal Certification, Educational Leadership, Instructional Leadership PreK-12 School Leadership; and Graduate Certificates for Superintendent, Principal, and Community College Teaching and Learning. The EDL department provides instruction through online, blended, and in-person modalities across statewide locations. All programs leading to certification are nationally accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Job Description

The Department of Educational Leadership is specifically seeking a collaborative colleague with expertise in PreK-12, who can work with faculty, staff, campus leaders, and students to strengthen ongoing program objectives. Candidates whose research and teaching foci complement and build upon the Department's goal to build critically oriented, data-literate educational leaders are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will teach Masters-level and Doctoral-level courses in our PreK-12 emphases, as well as work closely with doctoral students throughout their program including the dissertation process.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Conferred Doctorate in hand in the study of PreK-12 Leadership, Educational Policy or directly related field of Educational Leadership at the time of application. (Or anticipated degree completion no later than August 2023).
  2. Documented successful licensed PreK-12 school/district/agency level leadership experience (3 years full-time minimum).
  3. Documented successful graduate-level higher education instructional experience (2 years full-time equivalent minimum).


Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following:
  • A commitment to collaborative practices including teaching and mentoring and researching with graduate students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work and lead effectively across PreK12 school and district/agency-levels (including indigenous and rural minority settings).
  • Documented successful licensed PreK-12 school/district/agency leadership experience (5 years full-time minimum).
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in teaching across various teaching modes and pedagogical strategies including distance technologies, such as web-based instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching content-specific courses in preK-12 Educational Leadership, American Indian serving-school organizations, rural schools and leadership and administration utilizing blended, in-person, and online modalities.
  • Active engagement and successful experience working with people from a variety of diverse backgrounds including traditionally underserved and/or under-represented groups, especially those residing in Arizona or Regional United States Southwest.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of contemporary and seminal K-12 School District, scholarship, trends, practices, and policies.
  • Commitment to diversity including diverse communities from all racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, national origins, disabilities, age, veteran status, religious or political beliefs, sexual orientations, gender identities and expression, and lived experiences
  • Experience and interest in service to organizations at the State, Tribal or National Levels


General Information

  1. Teach in-person, blended, or online doctoral and master courses focusing on PreK-12 Leadership. Possible course assignments include, but are not limited to, The PreK-12 blended school district partnerships, American Indian-serving schools and district Leadership.
  2. Collaboration with the four areas of the department in planning courses and curriculum.
  3. Maintain active participation and membership in state and national leadership organizations.
  4. Direct graduate student research including dissertations, and serve on dissertation committees.
  5. Fulfill service responsibilities to the department, college, university, and profession.
  6. Work collaboratively across EDL, College of Education, and Northern Arizona University.


Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
