Department Summary

The Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect (CPAN) is a College of Education research and outreach unit. CPAN is dedicated to working with Oregon communities to better understand and support the safe, healthy, and nurturing environments of children and families, with a specific focus on preventing child abuse and neglect. CPAN's research informs culturally-specific prevention science, intervention, and policy efforts that build on community strengths. For more information go to cpan.uoregon.edu.

CPAN conducts research and evaluation related to the prevention and intervention of interpersonal violence, focusing mostly on child physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and intimate partner violence and their intersections with multiple forms of oppression and trauma - including but not limited to racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and ableism. CPAN's largest community-based project is the 90by30 Lane County child abuse prevention initiative. 90by30 is a primary prevention, collective impact, and public health approach to child abuse, child neglect, and identity-based violence in childhood. 90by30 is led by a county-wide and diverse violence prevention team with regional representation working in close collaboration with the Lane County Violence Prevention Coalition and partners. CPAN believes that child abuse and neglect is a public health, human rights, and social justice problem.

The Prevention Education and Advocacy Coordinator will prioritize equity and inclusion, be proactive and transparent in their communication, actively participate in CPAN's continuous prevention and anti-oppression education efforts, invest in personal growth and development, and is committed to CPAN's participatory action and community-campus partnership mission. All staff and volunteers must demonstrate a commitment to the CPAN/90by30 Values Agreement.
