Position Summary and Responsibilities
Position Summary and ResponsibilitiesThe Vassar College Library is seeking a Library Assistant to join the User Services Department. This position will report to the Library Operations Manager, and join a team of 9 (nine) Library Assistants and Specialists within the User Services Department.

The Library Assistant works in the circulation area in the Main Library as well as the Art Library. The incoming Library Assistant will be trained broadly in a number of traditional public services tasks, including interlibrary loan, reserves, and circulation and assist with closing.

Working closely with the Library Operations Manager, the Library Assistant will occupy a highly flexible and responsive position within the Department; priorities and tasks assigned may change frequently depending on needs within the Department, and the Library as a whole. Performs additional duties as assigned. This position is considered essential and may be expected to report to work to keep the library open during inclement weather.

Schedule:Thursday: 5:00pm - 12:15amFriday: 3:00pm - 10:15pmSaturday: 8:30am - 3:45pmSunday: 4:45pm- 12:15am

Break Schedule (Summer, Winter, and Spring Break) 8:30am- 5:00pm

  • Associate degree (or higher) in a related field and 2 years of related work experience preferred.
  • Previous library experience with library processing, circulation, and/or working with an integrated library system (such as Alma, EX Libris) is strongly preferred.
  • Two years of relevant library experience in an academic or public library environment strongly preferred.
  • Must have attention to detail, demonstrated ability for carrying out tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong customer service skills and commitment to providing service effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to work with bibliographic citations and materials in a variety of foreign languages.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on tasks.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize tasks.
  • Sound judgment and ability to analyze information and solve problems within the scope of the responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software and with the Web.
  • Ability to move, position and place objects up to and including 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to push heavy book trucks, move and unpack boxes.
