Job Details

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Bates College invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor for the academic year 2023-24. The search is open to theoretical, computational, observational, and experimental approaches to all subfields of physics and astronomy.  The successful candidate must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, have knowledge of/experience with inclusive pedagogy, and welcome the opportunity to mentor serious students and advise senior theses.  Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized and first-generation students are encouraged to apply.  The teaching load of the position is five courses per year (taught over two semesters and a four-week May Short Term).

We strongly encourage applications from individuals in underrepresented groups, individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to higher education due to societal, economic, or academic disadvantages, and individuals with a demonstrated capacity to advance the college’s continuing commitments to equity and inclusion. Candidates are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas.

PhD in physics or related field.

Review of applications will begin immediately. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy/experience that also addresses equity and inclusion, and a statement of research interests. Applicants should anticipate providing three letters of recommendation in the event that they are contacted for an interview. Interviews may be conducted via Zoom. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
