About the Opportunity:

Brown University is undergoing a tremendous growth in the arts, with newly appointed leadership for the Brown Arts Institute , and the state of the art, one of a kind Lindemann Performing Arts Center scheduled to open in Fall 2023. Brown seeks to fulfill its ambitious vision for the arts as an integral presence throughout a liberal arts education. We believe the arts are fundamental to critical inquiry into the most important questions facing humanity around the world, and we support artists operating at the highest levels of their craft to inform, and be informed by, scholars in disciplines across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Responsibilities:

We seek to hire a Financial and Administrative Coordinator to provide the Brown Arts Institute with high-level financial management, as well as oversight of the BAI’s numerous internal grant programs. The position manages ongoing commitments and new sources of revenue (including gifts and grants), manages expenses, develops budgets, updates long range financial models, and provides both regular and ad hoc reports and analysis to the BAI Leadership team. The position serves as the Cost Center Manager for the BAI and its associated cost centers, and also contributes to pre-award and post-award grants management. The Financial and Administrative Coordinator will have a strong working knowledge of the cost centers assigned to the BAI, as well as the policies and protocols related to transaction coding and approval. The position is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of, interpreting and applying, applicable University policies, and will serve as the key point person for financial reporting. Lastly, this position will have oversight of the BAI’s current and future grant programs, awarding over $300,000 annually to faculty, student, and community applicants.

An experienced, creative, and collaborative Financial and Administrative Coordinator will play a pivotal role in the future success of the Brown Arts Institute. The Financial and Administrative Coordinator must enjoy collegial, collaborative relationships with the BAI Leadership Team, as well as its subordinate division leads. Open lines of communication are of the utmost importance, as the BAI programs are vast, complex, and often politically sensitive.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of related financial experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Direct experience in financial management, including budget management, reporting, financial modeling, and financial analysis; policy implementation; including familiarity with all relevant policies and procedures preferred
  • Experience in an academic or non-profit arts setting preferred.
Competencies
  • Proven accounting skills/experience required including the ability to analyze and reconcile accounts.
  • Proven organizational, administrative, and time management skills.
  • Initiative and judgment to independently problem solve, ability to multitask and prioritize workload.
  • The ability to independently develop and implement short and long term goals.
  • Ability to work independently, but also as a strong team member when the situation warrants.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Customer-focused, customer service oriented.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft and Google platforms, especially Excel/Sheets.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
