The typical starting salary for this position is $43,000 - $60,800 depending on qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $42,600 - $79,000. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.

Job Summary:

The School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences (CDIS) focuses on world-leading research and education at the intersection of technology and humanity. Computing and data permeate every aspect of society from agriculture to tourism, medicine to manufacturing and everything in between. The school is a first-of-its-kind collaboration created in 2019 and is currently constructing its new home, a $260m facility in the heart of campus. CDIS is home to nearly 5,000 students and includes the largest major (Computer Sciences), the fastest growing major (Data Science), and one of the newest majors (Information Science) at UW-Madison. With more than 20,000 alumni across the globe, CDIS graduates are highly sought-after digital pioneers who are driving transformation and addressing the world's greatest challenges.

CDIS is creating a centralized marketing and communications team to support the work of our growing school and its units including the departments of Computer Sciences, Statistics and the Information School.

As part of this effort, we are seeking three talented and motivated marketing & communication specialists to be among the first roles to support that team. The Marketing & Communications Specialist positions will play an important role in shaping the school's marketing and communication efforts and will contribute to the raising the profiles of our school and departments.

The roles will report to the Director of Advancement and have separate focus areas/units across the school including the Departments of Computer Sciences, Statistics, and the Information School.

The Marketing & Communication Specialist will be responsible for developing and executing marketing and communication strategies that align with the units goals and objectives, including working closely with departments to develop engaging content that showcases their work and promotes their programs, while also collaborating with campus partners to build relationships and increase visibility.

Regular duties include:
- Developing stories and other original content that engages target audiences, especially news media, campus partners, peers, and alumni. The Marketing & Communications Specialist is responsible for all aspects of story creation, including background research, source interviews, drafting editorial content, incorporating edits, and securing approvals.
- Reviewing, proofing, editing, producing, and troubleshooting content for websites, blogs, and online platforms including social media
- Writing and editing of compelling copy for a variety of communication channels, including print materials, email newsletters, social media, and websites
- Providing project management and execution of marketing and communications programs, initiatives and tactical plans including prospective student marketing, advancement and corporate relations initiatives, promotional items/collateral, and event promotions.

A successful candidate will be a solutions-oriented individual who excels in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with many stakeholders is essential. This role will have regular contact with directors, faculty, and staff.

Candidates should have excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write articles on a specific topic, in addition to short-form copywriting. The position will also be expected to stay up-to-date on marketing and communication trends, best practices, and adhere to UW-Madison's editorial style guide.

This position provides the flexibility of a hybrid schedule with the majority of work occurring in person. The candidate will spend a portion of their time embedded with departments, working closely with team members, stakeholders, and subject matter experts, and the other portion of their time will be spent in the central CDIS marketing and communications office or remotely based on project needs and scheduled activities.

Responsibilities: Develops and drafts communication content and assists in the execution of the communications strategy in support of unit communication goals.
  • 5% Monitors reach and effectiveness of communication campaigns, projects, and initiatives
  • 20% Plans editorial content according to established goals and objects
  • 5% Communicates with stakeholders to verify requests and identify editorial resources
  • 30% Writes, edits, and publishes content for various communication projects and marketing platforms to align with strategic initiatives and established communication campaigns
  • 20% Provides project management and execution of communications programs, initiatives, and tactical plans
  • 10% Develops and implements marketing plans in support of unit marketing goals
  • 10% Develops, implements, and disseminates marketing materials through various communication mediums utilizing appropriate technologies and techniques

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
Degree in marketing, communications, public relations or related field

Qualifications:

Requirements:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in marketing and communications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to message a variety of audiences
- Demonstrated experience adhering to editorial style guide and ability to review content for accuracy, style, and tone
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience developing and executing marketing and communication plans
- Experience with social media management and digital marketing

Preferred:
- Experience in a higher education environment
- Familiarity with graphic design and video production
- Familiarity and/or interest in the disciplines of computing, data science, information science or related STEM fields

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
