Position Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo is inviting applications for an Indigenous Community Archivist . We are seeking applicants that possess a strong commitment to providing a means for Indigenous people to steward their knowledge from their worldview through community driven archival work. They will have a high level of understanding of the needs associated with archival initiatives in Indigenous communities, particularly the challenges associated with erasure misrepresentation, authority, control, accessibility, and lack of resources

In this role you will:
  • Primary point person for Indigenous community engagement and the Indigenous community liaison in the establishment of a new UB Haudenosaunee Hub intended to address institutional and Indigenous community facing archival needs involving the digitization and curation of Haudenosaunee knowledge and cultural heritage materials.
  • Ensure that community engagement is centered around efforts to develop a Haudenosaunee Knowledge, Archive and Resource Portal and the digital archive of materials relevant to the theme of 50 years of Native American Studies at UB as its first content site.
  • Support community trainings for Mukurtu users and provide digitization and archival project management support for Indigenous repositories and community initiatives.
  • Strong capacity in Indigenous research and community outreach, with experience in Indigenous archival methods and best practices.
  • Travel between the US-Canada border for departmental events.
  • Provide leadership in elevating the capacity for ethical Indigenous research within the UB Digital Scholarship Studio and Network ( DSSN ), the UB Libraries, and the campus at large in regard to digital archive and project initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree with 2 years experience. Education and experience may be satisfied by an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of best professional practices for culturally responsive engagement with Indigenous archival materials and demonstrated capacity for working with Indigenous archival repositories
  • Experience working in an archival setting
  • Demonstrated experience with Indigenous community outreach/relations
  • Selected candidate will be required to frequently cross the border to Canada for work
  • A valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle is required or candidate must otherwise demonstrate his/her capacity to meet the transportation requirements of the position
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and exemplary organizational skills
  • Strong capacity in Indigenous research and community outreach
  • Demonstrated experience with Haudenosaunee communities on digital projects
  • Familiarity with archival content management systems
  • Advanced computer skills, including digital archival platforms and Excel, familiarity with Mac and Windows
  • Ability to facilitate and lead trainings, workshops and community meetings
  • Experience working with Haudenosaunee languages is an asset
Physical Demands

Frequently moves materials weighing up to 50 pounds across campus for various events.

$55,000
